Hello everyone!

I have to build an e-commerce marketplace website and i have no prior experience in hosting or web related technologies. My knowledge of these technologies is minimal.
What i am hoping to find by writing this post is a mentor who will explain what i need technically for my project and perhaps some step by step guidance.
If there is anyone interested in hearing more about it please let me know.

Thank you for your time and i hope i havent broken any forum rules by doing this.

Hello,
What you are being tasked with is a very large project... One that brings concerns to me.
Being that you don't have much coding experience yet, I would really suggest getting experience in different languages like php, python, ruby, getting familiar with html/css.

After you have the basics down, you'll need to think about what technology you want to design the marketplace in. You'll need to gather all of the requirements for the project. Once you have a high level overview of your project, take a look at "work breakdown structures"... It's a fancy way of breaking down larger pieces into smaller tasks that are more manageable.

It may help you to look at how other open source marketplaces have been designed by looking at their source code.

Hopefully that gives you a jump point.

Best of luck!!

Try to find a managed web hosting service for your website and don't forget to ask what is included in that service because management services vary from host to host.

Since you have no experience and minimal knowledge. You can use WordPress and get a Premium theme from any paid themes website like themeforest. Most themes have the ability to setup the theme with sample data. So all you have to do is look for a theme, buy the one you like and use it.
Let me explain it in a few steps, it might help you understand easily:
  • Get a WordPress theme from themeforest.com
  • Install and Setup WordPress
  • Install and Setup Purchased and Downloaded Theme
  • Setup Sample Data (If it doesn't have the ability to setup sample data, you can ask theme author for help)
  • You are almost there.
But this is not all, you should get someone to setup security, optimization, and other stuff to keep it all green. As one of my friends mentioned above, go for a Managed Hosting that includes theme things, so you have these thing permanently. Getting this onetime won't be enough.

If you need help with anything, from building this e-commerce marketplace to managed hosting, you can reach me out.

I agree that the project you have been tasked with is huge.... but due to the existence of Platforms like WordPress, it is very possible.

  • Install WordPress.
  • Install the Woocommerce Plugin
  • Download a suitable theme (Preferably a paid theme)
With WordPress and Woocommerce, you can build fully functional E-commerce websites without having to write even a semicolon( ; )
