They are horrible for renewal prices. I started going with namecheap and find their prices to be pretty reasonable.

You can directly ask them.

$18 is more.
Better I would suggest you, Remove your card from their system.

Easy solution is move to Cloudflare Domain Registrar for free whois privacy/redaction + cost priced domain transfers. I wrote a guide on how you can do bulk domain transfers to Cloudflare Domain Registrar via Cloudflare API at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/16038/.

Hope that helps :)

Remove auto renew feature is the best way to control what you will pay for. Normally I renew a domain at Godaddy with price from $13 to $15 for a year.

It's usually higher than other registrars, so you should transfer out to another if you want. Usually, the transfer price is cheaper than the renewal price.

I have heard it said, that a little spin-off businesses was for premium domain name sales... people would search for a domain name using what appeared to be an independent (and free) web-based whois search engine, then when they found the domain (still available) that they wanted and jumped to a registrar to make their purchase, they would be surprised to see it was already registrar locked (seemingly on the same day the search took place) but - and here is the good bit, already available to buy as a premium domain several times more expensive than the original price... now how interesting is that?

Transfer your domain to Namecheap. The renewal price is cheaper than Godaddy and it offers WHOIS Protection for free.

You can try OnlineNIC and Namesilo for consistent low prices.

I hate some of the big companies because they always do this. Low prices and then absurd renewal costs. I had this issue with GoDaddy recently so I just transferred my domain away from them and then renewed it.

Whatever money, people think they are saving at GoDaddy, will surely be sucked back twofold after their guerrilla email marketing (referred to as "Service Notification System") begins rolling. They will scare the poor novices into owning $10/yr privacy, $5/mo website certification (really GoDaddy charges you for you to provide a site-wide backlink to their website), some email service (where they infer that bad things can occur if you don't buy some email accounts).

Just when you think you've finally satisfied their service warning system, by ordering all the suggested products, it's now time for shocking renewal invoices. $.99 domain turns into worst investment ever and also any website is hosted at GoDaddy, because you bought that too. So, needless to say, you've got very limited performance, but it's best not to bring it up with their support, because they are very well-trained to force you to upgrade all of it. "That will solve your problems. We just need more money." Fortunately, the upgraded plan is billed as a 12-24 month prepayment (for your convenience and peace of mind)."

The silver lining, I guess, for these people, is that they can really only go up from GoDaddy. And they will probably have a deep appreciation when they find a hosting provider/domain registrar that doesn't spend every waking moment plotting their next upsell.

GoDaddy has defiantly become more expensive over the years. You have a lot of options these days to move your domain name to different registrars, and it's worth taking a peak at a few. When you jump to a big giant like that, they are more for the volume than taking care of the small timers. Depending on the type of hosting you are looking for, you may be able to find a provider out there willing to renew your domain name for free if you transfer it to them - as long as you have an active account.

Yes, even I've noticed that with some other hosting providers as well, they lure you with the lighting deal initially and then they try to compensate it from the next year onwards.

It is a common practice in the hosting industry to provide low initial price and there is a reason behind that. When you sign up for new services you do not know if they will really meet your expectations. Anything can be presented on the website, however you need to try before commit for a longer period. When you are a client for an year for example and you have not paid a lot, but you now know that the real value of the service is way more than what you paid in the beginning, because you tested it ( you received good support, uptime, your website was up all the time and running smoothly) you should decide yourself whether to commit for longer period and pay a bit more, but be sure your website is hosted on a secure environment or take the risk, change hosting provider and pay low initial rate again. Of course, there are hosting companies who can hide the renewal price and then surprise you, but the reliable one does not. They inform the clients form the very beginning what the renewal rates are and provide an easy option to disable auto renewal for the services.

Yes you're right, in the first year you buy the domain name just for 1-5$, but the second year you have to pay 18$ or 19$, it's very expensive.
