Hi Everyone,
How to start with unmanaged VPS?
Almost VPS servers I used are managed VPS and I often ask my hosting providers when having problems.
Now I want to move to unmanaged VPS servers, what are steps to control it and having websites run smoothly on servers that I will manage?

Depending on your knowledge, of course, I would suggest that the first step should be choosing the control panel you want to use to manage your VPS. You can search online to learn about them, but basically, a control panel would give you all the basic tools for hosting a website.

Afterward, you might need to install some tools manually, which are not offered by the panel you chose.

It is easy to start with control panel (cPanel/Plesk or Directadmin), but you still need also knowledge how maintain server's and software's.

You may also need to consider server security, do it itself or using some plugins.

There is lot of things, like Backup Strategy and what if you coming problems, can you solve itself or do you need help.

Unmanaged VPS is a terrific way to develop Linux server administration skills. Make sure that you get a cheap vps with OS reload capabilities, preferably with client-side controls-so you can build/destroy/rebuild at your own pace if needed.

Hands-on experience is valuable for most people learning new skills. I would highly recommend getting access to a VPS which you can use as a sandbox for your testing.

I agree that you should choose a control panel first. CPanel works great. Then you should also consider how to backup and protect your server. There are lots of things to manage, actually. Why did you decide to do it yourself? For me it's easier not to be responsible for that.

You need to use the server control panel.
If you are a beginner, use VestaCP, in case you do not have a large number of sites on the same version of PHP.
If you have more than 5 sites and they use different versions of the PHP, Python, or something else, then in that case use: cPanel/Plesk, Directadmin or ISPmanager

Managing an unmanaged VPS server require basic level of expertise in running shell commands and running server related tasks. It usually does not come with user interface so everything is done via shell.

If you decide to go with unmanaged VPS then either hire a sys admin which might cost you a lot or get a solution which let you integrate the UI on top of your VPS server.
