That's honestly a really good question, I'm also looking for the answer to this too!
Edit: I did a bit of research, so a virus is just one type of malware. Malware refers to malicious software, which includes virus.
As stated in the source provided a virus is a type of malware. A virus is a piece of code which infects other software on your system, and can spread when the line of code is processed.

Viruses are a kind of malicious software with the main purpose of reproducing itself to other computers.
Malware is a broad term that we use for malicious software in general, it could be anything from adware to Ransomware.
The damage that a malware could cause varies on the malware itself. It could do anything from displaying ads to your screen (adware) to encrypting all of your files.
As for which one cause the most damage… it’s really hard to tell actually. There have been viruses that made the internet unusable due to the huge amounts of traffic that they created, and there have been kinds of malware that disabled hospitals, banks, airports, and many more, all at once.
