I am interested to know a difference between these two and what makes one better than another.

What are the cons and pros of Rainloop and what are the cons and pros of Roundcube?

If you had to choose, what would you end up choosing ?

Hello,

Rainloop provide a clean interface, the ability to manage several mailbox without having to login/logout each time and it can be installed just by running a single command.
Rondcube just do it's job, it's a simple webmail.

Contrary to what @VirtuBox said, the present RoundCube UI is pretty clean; Rainloop is maybe a fraction cleaner (old standard sized sliders replaced by vanishing thin but hard to click but current fad sliders). Admittedly, older Roundcube versions were clunky with 3D look and such.

Roundcube is indeed a tad harder to install and requires a database like mysql, which itself requires a bit of setup. So for many Rainloop may be the easy choice.

However, be warned. If any of your users have really huge mailboxes, Rainloop basically does not support this. They've added and standardized some parameters that try to workaround this, but I still had issues. So after trying Rainloop, I was forced to go back to Roundcube (which I'd used the older less clean UI version of for years). The "back end" of Roundcube is more solid.

We use roundcube on our servers because Directadmin has a better integration with it like auto login.
