Which webmail application should I choose? Which one would I recommend for my customers and why?
Any better alternative?

Roundcube for me :D It's the best looking and has a good UI. Squirrel mail and horde seem to have an interface out of the late 1990's.

I am on same boat with LJSHost. I also like using RoundCube
it has a friendly interface, looks professional and easy to read/manage my emails.

I like Roundcube the best since it has the best looking interface. They all work the same, because it is just email. Roundcube looks the most like a real email application.

Unfortunately there are no better alternatives...well, you could pay for some like esmail. It gives a more professional feel...but the price might not be wort it,.

I'd stick with Roundcube.

I like squirrelmail, easy loading and basic interface but seem Roundcube is better because it has drag-&-drop message management and full support for MIME and HTML messages.

I also like Roundcube , load fast, its got interface more like gmail , easy navigation . But its always good keep different options open for customers as some customer might like squirrelmail or horde, with cpanel you can give all three options to your customers.

I agree with webhostuk, it is reason why I always choose Roundcube every time when I read my mail with webmail.
If you use mobile devices, you can setup pop and smtp and reading emails from them, it is very easy and convenient.

From this short list I would also go with Roundcube. However few months ago I laid my eyes on RainLoop and fell in love with it.

+1 for RoundCube.

Never heard of RainLoop, but looking it over, look clean and simple, especially for clients. May have to play around with it later on.

Probably one of things where it was setup for them years ago, and that's all they knew of, so any other option just "doesn't exist".

It feels nice, smooth work, possibility to integrate multiple mail accounts.
I have never heard of that one. Why did you fall in love with it?
I like this question of DefaultUser :D

Sometimes it has no reason why you "fall in love" with something/someone that
you could not explain why. :D

Maybe it came by the first view or just a point on it that you like.
For me, I vote for Roundcube because it looks professional and easy to manage/read emails.

I'm not really in love with Rouncube, Horde or Squirrelmail. I'm using rainloop and in my opinion it's the best webmail currently available. You can install it easily on any server with php.

Agreed with VirtuBox here, I hate having to double click to open an email
If i am not wrong then it could load mail content in another frame with a click only.

the horizontal preview pane is so out dated. I normally use RainLoop or Afterlogic Webmail Lite. Both are good.
But these are not default options on hosting panels and you need to install them to the server manually, right?
I also am finding a better option than using Squirrelmail, Horde or RoundCube but that is not an easy task.

I use squirrelMail. The reason why is because its less to load and its fast to get straight to your mail no extra stuff going on and chewing up bandwidth.

I used Horde at first for myself inside Cpanel then later migrated to the squirrelmail. For client I have setup Roundcube. It's lot easier for clients to navigate between the mails. Also the amount of time it takes for loading may be slightly higher than squirrelmail and horde. But it's good enough on many ways. I prefer to suggest roundcube to clients. Because the interface is really professional and you can teach clients how to use it.

I have found that too. I think responsive theme is something even squirelmail has issues with it. So I am guessing that in future updates of those apps it may improve. For now I am guessing roundcube is good enough. And in case if you want the responsive theme, you can go for Zoho and GSuite.

Webmail is my life. I work from it all day. I use SquirrelMail but with the Ensignia skin (formerly nutsmail). My inbox looks slick and I have it set up with message highlighting, have my To Do lists top left above folders. Have a place to store notes. That's all I need.

I forgot to check responsive theme on these webmail applications but anyway you gave me a good experience without testing them :D

It is pretty strange from a web hosting expert here is using webmail to check emails. Why you don't configure it to Gmail or an email management tool like Outlook to manage emails better or Gmail has filters to avoid spam emails.

No way I'm ever going to send my email to Gmail to read. People just don't take care about privacy these days. I have my own servers, why would I send email elsewhere. I have a customised webmail program that works better than Gmail or Outlook with my own spam filters. I travel a lot, I need all my email online all the time.

I am very curious about which you are taking about in this line.
is the program written by you or existed form something else on the net that I didn't know?
Or it is still webmail program (Squirrelmail, Horde, RoundCube) but you customized it with better configurations and addons?
