Cloud hosting has turned in to a marketing term.
Many, many providers use it just to market the feature of "hourly billing".

The reason few hosts offer true cloud is due to the fact it's very expensive.
SAN with SSD's (usually) - not a cheap investment. Nodes set aside in the event of failure... Places like Amazon and Google offer true cloud hosting - but it can get very expensive, very quickly.

At the end of the day - start small, and if you require cloud hosting in the future - go for it. If you're just starting out - you don't need it. Any reliable web host will be able to offer you a good amount of uptime (industry standard is 99.9%).

Hi there,

Thanks for clarifying the stuff. What my understanding is, Cloud is just like a VPS hosting. But, there is a difference between the two:

VPS = A single dedicated machine (server) is divided into a few virtual servers.
Cloud = An entire network of connected machines are divided into virtual servers. If one of the linked machines goes offline, the data will start serving using other machines which ensures the maximum uptime.

In VPS, it's a bit difficult to scale up and down. While in the cloud, one can quickly scale up and down the resources. Another significant difference is the pricing model. In Cloud, users are charged for what they have consumed. Particularly, pay-as-you-go model with hourly rates.

Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. Would appreciate your words.

Depends on the provider. As I mentioned places like Digital Ocean, Vultr, and Linode are simply selling VPS branded as "cloud".
In these cases (and more), it's a marketing term.

The billing model you describe as "pay as you go" I've not encountered or know of any providers doing this. Hourly rates are not uncommon in a lot of providers.

I won't say if what you're describing is correct or not - as the term "cloud" is open to interpretation.

"Cloud Hosting" might be used from many irresponsible people as a phony, marketing term, but it actually has a technical explanation and it is "a Web hosting service provider from a computing infrastructure built with Cloud computing, where the processing nodes (servers) that offer CPU, RAM and do the processing operations are physically separated from the Storage Nodes (Storage Area Network or Storage Servers)".

So, if any company claims to offer any kind of Cloud-based service they have an obligation to explain what kind of infrastructure they use to provide Cloud Hosting services.

You your question @livsn85. When you Shared Hosting account or Virtual Server is hosted on any Cloud infrastructure, you can scale up processor (CPU) and memory (RAM) resources, without interruption of the services (or wit very minor interruption). There are also services like "High Availability" and "Fault-Tolerance", which ether minimize any possible service downtime or even unsure real 100% service uptime.

Hi livsn85,

Cloud hosting can come with both advantages and disadvantages aspects.
1. You can avoid a large amount of money spending on web hosting.
2. It grows with your company. You only pay what you use.
3. You don't have to monitor your site, your hosting provider will do that for you (most of them will).
4. Flexible IT infrastructure.
5. Energy efficiency. You don't have to spend a lot of money on energy consumption., let your provider pay them.
6. Data is available for you in any type of platform.

There's more, but this is the main benefits when it comes to the cloud hosting. BUT, really think about both advantage and disadvantage of cloud and you'll find a solution.

good luck,

There are numerous factors that are becoming the reasons for cloud adoption. Your business can get huge benefits from cloud no matter what's the size of your business either small, medium or large. If you need my suggestions then I will highly recommend you to go with cloud hosting and the reasons are following:
1. Flexibility: Users can scale services to fit their needs, customize applications and access cloud services from anywhere with an internet connection.
2. Scalability: Users can easily scale up/down their computing resources as per their requirements
3. Accessibility: Users can easily access cloud services from any location just with an internet connected device
4. Data security: Users will get full data security since cloud implements latest security patterns
5. Pay structure: Users need to pay only for what they use.

I literally work in this department. The whole thing is about accessibility. Accessibility is extremely important to more and more companies to be able to work from home on work documents. Cloud hosting gets you security, scaling your needs and accessibility. The only thing is looking into actually how often their cloud servers are down for maintenance versus being up, because even 8 hours of downtime can result in many lost sales and work hours for people.

The other advantages of the cloud are its security features as it strongly encrypts users’ data to keep them protected from any unauthorized access, tampering or loss. Today businesses do not bother for their data back up and security issues because peace of mind is guaranteed with cloud enterprise services.

Cloud hosting offers performance and security and you can scale with ease if you go with cloud hosting.
There are no drawbacks as such except it might cost you a bit more as compare to shared hosting. Other than that, it is easy to manage if you go with managed cloud hosting like WPEngine or Cloudways.

One of the major benefit of cloud hosting is cost savings and that is the reason most of the small business owners have adopted it. Another benefit can be security, Flexibility and Mobility.

Security : It is one major droop up that several organizations have once it involves adopting a cloud computing resolutions is that the issue of security.

Flexibility : Cloud offers businesses a lot of flexibility overall versus hosting on a neighborhood server.

Mobility : Cloud hosting permits mobile access to all the data it can be through any device with internet.

Adrian
