I have a blog at Wordpress and I was thinking of saving a domain name of my own before somebody else take it, but I was also wondering if should I get a domain name even without creating a website? Should the 2 come together if I'm planning to have my own blog site?

You can register the domain for the future use. You can use it later. There won't be any issue. If you would like to create the new blog/website on it then you can create that on the registered domain. If you would like to redirect your current website to the newly registered domain then you just add the redirection so your website will redirect to it properly.

If you want to launch your own site someday, you should definitely secure the name you want. If you don't register your domain and wait until you are ready to launch your website, it might be taken. It is not necessary to buy hosting as soon as you have the domain name. Registering a domain name is a way to secure the name of your choice.

You can buy a domain without having any hosting service. In the future, when you want to release your blog / website, simply purchase a hosting service with a provider and link your domain to it.

I have over a dozen domain names that I registered over the years, but have never used. I don't know if I ever will need all of them, but it's nice to know that I own them just in case I do need them.

If I don't need to use them within the next few years, I can probably sell them for a good profit. At least, I hope I will be able to. I guess that depends mostly on the name and whether anyone else will be interested in it for their business or brand.

Always, if the idea and name comes into your head go ahead and register it! If not there is a chance it will be by someone else.

A domain is cheap these days, Just grab a domain you think you might need or want later develop a project and move on.
If you don't do nothing, just sale for the same price or let it expire. At least you have tried :)

It is always a good thing to secure a domain name in advance. But also plan to establish your website as soon as possible. Websites are highly rewarding.
