What am I missing when not using dedicated server?
I am not familiar with dedicated server but it seems to be important to many people. I would like to know the benefits because it will fully explain what I am missing out on. I see people talk about dedicated server a lot and I would like to have that interest in it too.
I know there are many people like me out there who have never used it. What am I missing out when not using dedicated server?

Dedicated servers simply give you complete control over what you run on them, but you still need to abide by your providers Terms of Service. Not everyone needs a dedicated server as many sites can function properly on shared or VPS platforms.

It's not only the price of the dedicated server that is much bigger but also you probably don't need a dedi, and then there is also the software licenses that are much more expensive for dedicated. A VPS might be a good solution before jumping into a Dedicated.Welcome to FloXera

Well , it actually depends on your requirements. what type of contents you want to host OR what type of services you are looking to run. Then the number of hits .... etc... etc..
so to start with VPS is good option.

It will be suitable only when you really need more resources. If you have single site with less visitors then you can stick with your shared hosting service or VPS.
Dedicated server is needed only when you have number of clients or sites which you would like to host separately with too many resources.

Dedicated server provides the best performance depending on the configurations that you have and you will get the full control over the server. But security is a factor that you should keep in mind, otherwise you will have to select a fully managed dedicated server. Resources that is available on your server will be fully allocated to your websites and that is the main reason for the best performance.

dedicated server gives you complete control on the server. Also many of the dedicated server provider gives the free IPMI or KVM over IP with Dedicated server so you can control the OS installation, reboot and firmware update and all through the IPMI. But if you are not good in server administration skills, you need to hire a system admin or purchase the dedicated server with Free server management support. Also, you just need to purchase dedicated server only if your website or works needs dedicated resources. If you are running just blogs or simple site. VPS or shared hosting should be fine.

A dedicated hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server which he/she does not share with anyone else. It is much more flexible than shared hosting.Organizations have full control over the server and make choices of operating system and hardware to be used.Dedicated hosting service offers high performance, email stability, security and complete control.I would say you are missing the listed freedoms and choices above. However, due to the high price of dedicated servers it is mostly meant for websites that receive a large traffic volume. So if by any chance your website does not have a substancial volume of traffic,I would say you are not missing anything.

Depends on the environment. If you are using using shared hosting, you likely don't have root access. If you are using OpenVZ, then you don't have root access or kernel level support due to shared kernel. If you are using KVM, then you have full root access and can generally get access to pass through CPU features. You biggest limitation is the kernel and platform you might be using when it comes to not having full root access to a dedicated server. Having a dedicated hardware, you can control all variables via IPMI access. You have much more detail when it comes to issues with hardware. The list goes on, however having full access is always better. If you want to take that full access and then virtualize it, then that is still more control than you would have if you were renting a VPS or doing shared hosting or any other non dedicated service.Dallas Colocation and Auto Deploy Dedicated Servers by Incero, 9 years and counting!
