Wordpress theme: free or premium

I have a couple of wordpress sites however, I have never used a premim themes. I am not using premium themes because I don't have a budget for that. Even if I had budget, I would not buy a premium theme because the price I have to pay to premium themes can be used to promote the site instead. By not using premium theme, an I being unprofessional. Since free themes are free to use, there willbe hundreds of sites using that theme and this will make each site similar.

All depend if you customize yourself a theme. Premium theme provide several examples pages you can easily edit to make them unique. But with a free or paid theme, it require to make a lot of customization before having a clean website.
In most of case, free themes are easier to customize than premium themes.

If you think some other sites will look same as yours then you can go for a custom theme development by a developer who can fulfill your requirements or you can customize any theme as per your needs that will make your theme unique from other.

Theme Forest has lots of paid themes and they are not expensive (~50€ or less).
You have HTML templates, WP or photoshop layouts so you can customize according to your brand.
Many companies use their themes with some customisations an adjustments.

Free themes are good if you use from trusted sources like being shared from Wordpress site.
Other than that, you should go with premium WP themes because they are supported better than free ones and they looks professional and more benefits for online business.
I only think using free themes for non commercial sites or personal blogs then it is a purpose to use free themes.

I think it is better to always, whenever possible, to customize your own themes and to present an original and attractive theme-based site based upon your own logos and styles whenever possible. It is about establishing a type of brand for yourself and taking every opportunity to show your care and expertise when it comes to your enterprise. Customers appreciate originality and the hard work that goes into it.

I don't think that using a free theme makes you unprofessional at all. If you don't need support or some added features that most premium themes come with then buying a premium theme means that the money is wasted or at least no utilized.

Just because you use a free theme, that doesn't mean that your site will have to look like hundreds or thousands of other WordPress sites.

There are many different things that you can do with styling, customizations, CSS, images, logo's and so on, to make your site look unique. Your mind and time to setup your site differently than the countless others out there using the same theme are the only limitations you will really have.

Besides, you can also do many cool things with plugins to change the looks, feel and functions of your Wordpress site so that it is different that the rest.
