Have you ever used a Semi Dedicated hosting plan? Is it as good as a VPS?

I am trying to decide between a Semi Dedicated hosting plan or a cheap VPS. So far my website has hit the cpu limit twice on my shared hosting provider. I can get a semi dedicated hosting plan from them for $29 a month and they say it's a good as a vps and hassle free. So my question is have you ever used a Semi Dedicated hosting plan? Is it as good as a VPS?

Hello Soulwatcher, go for a VPS, and with another hosting provider in my opinion, because "Semi-dedicated" doesn't exist and it's only a way to ask you to pay more for the same performance. It's like selling "Semi-secure" SSL certificates.
VPS (good VPS, not only the cheapest) are available from $5-10 almost everywhere (unmanaged) and will provide you guaranteed resources, and better performance.

Thank you so much for clarifying. I was wondering how could it be better than a shared hosting plan if it's still a shared hosting plan. I am not going to be able to go with a unmanaged VPS because I don't know how to manage a VPS. I am going to have to go with a cheap managed VPS. Do you have any recommendations?

Cheap and managed are in most case not compatible.
It will probably be better to buy a cheap vps, and to hire a freelancer to install cpanel or plesk. This way you don't pay for "managed" services, which often mean "with cpanel", and your vps will be working properly;

Demi dedicated servers are better sometimes then a VPS . It depend upon the hardware configuration of the physical machine.

Better to go with a kvm VPS to have the resources "dedicated" to you. It gives you better control over the resources you rent.
