I really need some information. If you could tell me step by step it would be great. I'm more interested in web hosting business. But an automated niche site would be also great too.
How many clients or visitors should I have to earn 20k a month with web hosting? And how's the best way to start?
Thank you!

$20k/month will take time, and a lot of work.

How many clients depends on what you offer and how much you charge for each account.
If your average plan cost is $1/mo, you will need 20,000 clients. If your average plan cost is $10/mo, you will need 2,000 clients.

The best way to start is to get a reseller account with a quality host. Build your website and integrate it with WHMCS (to automate orders). Then spend your time marketing your brand and providing support.

Before you start, be sure to research everything and develop and solid business plan!

Considering how saturated the market is, you will have to put in your full dedication (as stated by RDO Servers) and also put in some investment ($$$) to it as well. Be careful on choosing who to resell with though, choose reputable hosts so you do not fall in a crisis with your clients and secure yourself with legal info as well.

For 20K/month it's gone be a hard, hard journey....
Before you ask here to the crew: "how do i make 20k/month" you should answer yourself "what do i have different that makes me different from others companies and make clients choose me and not my neighbours?" It's a good question to start.

You have 2 options -

1. The old fashion way. Make your web hosting reliable. Challenge the local business organization going to door to door and offer a DOT com. What I remember :) I started a small web hosting company and invested like $200 and the company I sold for 40K. After 8 Months. LOL! I offer people FREE HOSTING with DOMAIN if you subscribe for an year. I reached almost 2000 yearly users within 6 months. Just I asked my friends and family is they interested.. and wala! I'm making money! From next day.

2. My way. Awesome Server Offers. Client meetings and understand what they really wanted. Have some coffee and my LAPTOP, more coffee.. Travel and spend money to make connections, Arrange awesome tech team, rented office, Buy servers from hp/servers, Located them at many DCs and everything.

Now! It's you who choose which direction you going to follow.

Thanks

I think target does not seem reasonable if you are new. I mean for this target to reach many people are working day and night. And they have to keep in mind variables such as hosting quality, uptime, software management, customer support and price. All of this and more variables as market changes. So the slow and steady approach is the only way to go for making good money in web hosting industry. I think it's possible if your customers are satisfied and they recommend your service to others.

Hate to be the one the break it to you but 20k a month will take you at least 10+ years starting from nothing.

Perhaps years ago things were easy but due to the massive saturation even making 1k a month will take a couple of years to get the ball rolling.
It would be easier but every man and his dog sees easy money when they look at web hosting when it's now one of the hardest business to make money.

Best way to start is get yourself a reseller or managed VPS (unless you are very technically competent) and try and get your first customer then build on it.

If your just looking at the money you will not make any, customer service is everything in the business these days. Keep your clients happy and more will follow. Then you can start dreaming about 20k a month.

In regards to a web hosting biz, success depends on how much capital you have to invest and how smart you are at running it. If you have both you might reach 20K in only a few months - because it's all about reaching the large market before someone else does. However, though if your wanting 20K in profits then would a 1000 USD startup be enough, or would it take more? Does anyone on here have an idea? I'm thinking it would be much more.

It doesn't matter if you invest 1k or 10k into the this business it's not going to matter.

This business is so saturated the idea that someone new can come along, start offering hosting and be sitting on top a 20k a month pile of cash after a few months or years is beyond laughable. It's this sort of thinking that caused the massive saturation we have now. So many people who don't have clue about the technical or business side of things just jumping on the bandwagon to make some easy money.

We got to $20k/yr in our third year of business which was 2004. However, things were a lot different then. It was so easy to manipulate Google to get good rankings. These days you'll probably need to invest $100k on day 1 to get there. You need a real USP, proprietary tools and you'll need to spend more on brand management and marketing than everything put together.

$20k is going to take a lot of work. It's going to really depend on what market you are, your prices etc. With there being a unlimited supply of providers you'll need to be so different that you stand from everyone and also have a huge marketing budget and a team of staff working hard every day. I would also say other services such as web design as you can make pretty good money that way. For a few banners and a logo I paid $50 just give you an idea. You'll be able to sell hosting to those customers you design for. Just an idea.. Come to to think of it I wish I knew how to design....

Can it be done today? Yes but it's going take lots of money and time for sure.
