Yum update or not?

I have a VPS running cPanel, i received an automated email from hosting control panel.

Current kernel version is out of date. running kernel: 2.6.32-642.15.1.el6.x86_64, most recent kernel: 2.6.32-696.3.1.el6.x86_64 Update the system's software by running 'yum update' from the command line and reboot the system.

Should I run yum update or not? this VPS is working as well and I don't think I need run any updates, am i right?

It is recommended to update the kernal when needed.

Last year, we had a few customers who's servers were exploited by the 'Dirty Cow' exploit. This only effected those who had not updated their kernal.

Kernel updates happen for a number of reasons, but like RDO says, the security patches can save your server!

You just need to run

then reboot, this is a nasty little exploit I just got done patching our servers.

I ran this command and after some minutes it finished and I could reboot server.
It is not difficult as I thought.

I do not recommended to automate this process because of sometime your server can failed to boot due to improper kernel update or some error.

You don't need to apply every update, Some update are not related to security at all.

I have to agree, kernel updates should not be automated. If you want automated real time updates go with Ksplice or Kernel care.

These services allow automated updates without the need of a reboot.

Hello, if you haven't basic Administrative level, do not do it. If you need upgrade and you have work project in your vps and downtime for you critical, better give $10-$20 do administrator who has more practice.
