No you don't, normally WHM will update by itself automatically, except if you are on old OS, in which WHM will not support/release new versions for it.

It's always a good idea to backup your server before making any updates

Hi Paul,

Usually, you don't need to take backups before updating WHM. Because they have the mechanism to do that without corrupting data.
But if you are using a very old version such as 80, 82, it is better to take a complete MySQL Database Backup before the process.

You can simply update your WHM Version Here.

Login to WHM > Update Preferences. and set the required version.
WHM > Upgrade to Latest Version. And start.

The hosting companies must have backups in case something goes wrong with scenarios like this. However, it is a good idea to backup everything before taking these kinds of actions.

Keeping WHM up to date is essential for taking use of the console's newest capabilities and avoiding any possible security issues that might come when using older software.
Before proceeding with the WHM update, you should:
Back up your complete server, ideally. If anything goes wrong during the upgrade, a Backup will allow you to restore to your previous server configuration.
Restart the DV server.
Be prepared to reinstall and/or restore from backup data if necessary.
1. Sign in to WHM.
Click the Update Now button in the top-right corner of WHM.
3. Choose Upgrade by Clicking..
4. Allow the updating procedure to finish.
5. Reboot your server once the upgrade is complete.
That's all! Your WHM / cPanel version should now be up to current.
