How do you guys usually evaluate SEO providers?

We're looking into outsourcing some of our SEO as the workload is just too heavy for my small team. We don't have the budget to hire the more well known SEO firms so we're looking into smaller firms. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to get a good gauge on them. A lot seem to be fly by night operations who just bill you for substandard work. We've been burned once - an experience I don't want to repeat, so I want your take on this?

I am not sure because I also looked up that name on some IM forums and I do not think they offer any such services on marketing forums. You should dig deeper and also have a phone call with their team, so you can get an idea on how they do their stuff.

I would have realistic expectations of them. For instance, if they were saying they could make a specific ranking on Google, Bing etc., then I'd be doubtful. On the other hand, if they promised to do a certain amount of work in certain time period, then I could believe that, assuming they had a good reputation. For instance, if they said we will build so many backlinks and do so much writing work, then I could possibly take them at their word for it.
