I have been playing around with a few control panels that we need for a few small projects and have been testing out VestaCP and Ajenti. Both on a 1GB Linode VPS.

VestaCP is simpler and feels more lightweight. I like how you can easily edit source files from the interface. It is lacking a few functions but to run a simple site without manually installing and keeping up everything it feels pretty mature. Disappointed it does not support email piping. https://vestacp.com

I had years ago tried Ajenti and now it has changed a little. They offer version 1 with the new Ajenti V which adds support for php-fpm, nginx, etc. I liked it but the interface felt even more limited in features and a little heavier on usage. I do like the interface much better. http://ajenti.org

What is your experience with free control panels? Can you suggest other good alternatives? The more flexible the better.

Hello Optimidia, ISPConfig is a good alternative with a lot of features, even if it's sometimes harder to configure it properly. But you can find several tutorials available on https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorials/ispconfig/

There is also http://centos-webpanel.com, which is probably the most powerful free control panel available with multi php version support and the ability to switch between Apache - Apache + Nginx - Apache + Nginx + Varnish.

You can find some answers to know the difference between 2 free hosting panels Ajenti and VestaCP here https://forumweb.hosting/14712-what-are-the-differences-between-vestacp-vs-ajenti.html
I used VestaCP and it has some issues and you will face with them when using free hosting panels. The alternative to those panels are Centos web panel, it is a good free hosting panel.

How is CentOS webpanel with memory usage? I went through it very quick as it seemed to be a little resource intensive. It's got some really nice features but it feels way to heavy for only one or two sites. What's your experience with this? Does it scale depending on the software you decide to use?

I tried both so I wasn't really looking for the differences (as I actually briefly explained it), I am more looking into alternatives and why would you suggest them. Have you used them yourself previously?

Virtualmin has been around for a very long time and has a lot of support from the community. They've really made some improvements over the years. They do have other projects going on as well which you might want to check out. Even their paid versions are very affordable. We pay a fortune in Cpanel licenses each year and wish people would know more about alternative control panels out there...

If you are looking for a free control panel then I will be suggesting you with OVI Panel. Which comes for free and it is reliable to use. My experience with OVI Panel was good and you can also try,

Why use OVI Panel?

1) One click secure panel option available so clients can enable secure access to the panel with https for the hostname.

2) Support NodeJS, installation support is available with Nodejs module where Nodejs configuration is made simple.

3) OVI Panel has a PHP execution log feature, an easy UI feature to find suspicious PHP execution and an alternative to blocking the hacked/malware/injected files easily.

For more information can visit ovipanel.com

I Love Centos Web Panel, (CWP), because it has many features like Cpanel, and we can transfer a website Cpanel to CWP easily.

My vote goes to Virtualmin. The most undervalued cp out there.

We can Activate Varnish Cache server in CWP panel with few simple clicks.
It is one of the greatest feature on this free panel which improve the performance of the website. As a frontend caching engine it boosts the website loading speed and reduce server’s CPU load. User can choose either Disk-based or RAM-based caching mechanism. However if the server / VPS has a generous amount of RAM, then you can allocate part of it for Varnish to store its cache files. RAM-based caching is however faster than Disk, even an SSD.

I would recommend using Virtualmin. I have been using it for over 5 years now and never had any issues with it. It is based on Webmin and is a free alternative to cPanel and Plesk.
Webmin provides you with an interface that allows administration of the underlying system. Using Webmin you can install and update packages, configure the web server and database server, etc.
Virtualmin is based on Webmin and other than the ability of managing the server, you can use Virtualmin to set up domains, manage databases, etc.

You can go for cPanel which cost you around $15/m as the support is easily avaiable , you can serach in google , youtube related to queries are you get easy solutions as its openly available and your customer will feel happy because in free one lot of issue comes, No control over .
But if you are just looking to host a single website then in that case better go for paid hosting which will cost you less than a cpanel fee .
You can share exactly how many websites you are looking to host so that we can discuss more on this .
