Cloud is more about auto scaling , fail-over techniques and the most important difference of cloud is pay as you use it. So on some particular day you expect huge traffic and do not wish to lose performance of your website that time on cloud server you can allocate full resource usage and pay just for that single day , without paying for whole month. While on VPS scaling is possible , buts not the way it functions on cloud server.

Well before you even opt for cloud first see the features of the cloud hosting that your provider is offering .. if its a cloud hosting then it must be scalable , should have high availability , Fail over feature etc... as that is what the cloud is.

If we speak of the environment of cloud server and VPS, then it is very similar. The difference between cloud hosting and VPS hosting are if one partition dedicated servers then VPS server are available, in cloud hosting servers are connected to a network of similar servers which can take over the server functional a particular server in case it goes down.

Hi,
most companies use cloud name as way of marketing only.

True cloud stands for scalable resources, self-healing, high availability. you can built multiple Virtual machines in the cloud[shared resources of multiple physical servers].
VPS or VM stands for fixed or up-gradable resources, virtualization in single server or in the cloud.

At the end of the day, you will be using VM, but cloud can be more productive.

choice differs case by case basis; also, your personal opinion matters.

What do you guys mean for scaling in cloud hosting?
In VPS i could upgrade downgrade my plan based on my budget and requirements, that's called as cloud hosting, right?

VPS upgrade and downgrade may also come under cloud, but it should be automated according to the resource usage.

Nowadays some providers market everything as Cloud hosting, it becomes very confusing however the best way to distinguish true Cloud hosting from a VPS is the failover option.

Cloud hosting would be a better option as they have redundancy whereas VPS does not.

This means that Cloud has transparent hardware failover redundancy E.g. CPU, HDD fail, the backup will take over automatically and clients would not be affected by it.

Regarding budget, a cheap clouds redundancy might be lower than a high end VPS's one and both are in the similar price range. Therefore its more a question of budget when it comes down to Cloud vs VPS redundancy. Keep in mind that there are decent providers that don't oversell their nodes and have overall great uptime or 100% for several months at a time.

The difference between these two terms is minor. Generally we mislead the basic difference between the two. It's because of the less awareness regarding the differentiating factors of these web hosting technologies. VPS hosting is based on servers which are crafted using virtualization mechanism. Cloud hosting is a technique in which robustly scalable and often virtualized resources are delivered as a service over the internet.

@VictorVictories & @vicsylicious are both right. I just make it simple for your. If you have one server and divide it off you create VPS. If you a number of servers and join them as one network and then divide them its called cloud. So basically in the end you will be getting the same thing as your paying for your slice. The back end technology is different and the front end result would be same. Period.

Honestly, you need to look at the need of your website. Does it need a private or public cloud? A private cloud would give more security and public is less. If you need a public cloud, go for a cloud hosting. However, if you need a private cloud, then look into the VPS, as it is cheaper. Cloud offers a pay-as-you-go kind of resources, but VPS is more like a monthly or yearly payment plan.

VPS is your own server which is act as your computer on which you can host the multiple sites, install applications and related services on it. You can built your own security alters and firewall on the dedicated server. You will have your own set of bandwidth, hard-disk and resources. You can rent the disk space, bandwidth, resources on the dedicated server.

You will have the root access of the server as it's your own server.

Cloud hosting -

Cloud hosting service will have the on demand resource allocation. There is harder security setup on the cloud hosting service.

Main principle of cloud hosting is divide as per the need. Cloud used to distribute the required resources on multiple servers as used them as per the requirement. There are multiple servers work together. If one server fails then other will start loading the same task without any delay. Cloud is nothing but the one larger storage space and processor.

Here are the some of the advantages of cloud hosting for you -

1. Accessibility - Main advantage of cloud hosting is that the files are accessible anywhere and anytime. You can access the files when you would like to access without matter of place.

2. Backup facility - Cloud hosting service always have the copy of your data on the the server. So in the case of disaster, you will have the copy of data even if the data on the main server get deleted or lost.

3. Low cost solution - You will need to pay just the amount for the storage which you are actually using.

4. Secure service - You don't have to worry about the security. Cloud hosting provider will have the best infrastructure on which you don't need to worry about the security , they have their setup for security.

5. High degree of uptime
