I'm new to anything other than shared hosting and I am looking for some information on many things. One of them is about the control panel options for a VPS. I am thinking that if I do get a VPS I might use a free control panel but don't know anything about them.

I am wondering what is the best free control panel for a VPS?

For beginners who are new to VPS and server management, I would recommend you to use CentOS web panel, it is easy to use and add websites.
After installed it, you can add domain names to it and upload files to your websites to use immediately. There are some configurations you can concern but they are advanced configurations and you can study from hosting articles on the internet or asking some experts on the forum.

If you are looking for free I suggest you checkout Webmin, it's very decent and has a big open source community.

In addition to all the panels listed in this thread, check ISPConfig and Froxlor too. Pick the one that suits you the most. All of them have demos online.

Check ISPconfig or Webmin. If you also consider a low-cost commercial panel, then you can probably also consider ISPmanager (4 EUR/month in retail).

Just curious, what is pricing for ISPconfig? its features? Did you used it?
After I installed it, Do I need to do some configurations to make my website run on the internet?
I mean I want to add my websites to the hosting panels and use it immediately. Will that work?

I tried Webmin but I left it after 1 day installed, It is pretty complex and hard to use. I am not a web host thus I don't have more experience for configurations and server management.

If provider do not have ISPConfig OS template then installation process can be a little tricky. All Configurations are done during the installation and after that you just simply add domain and upload your website.

For first steps in VPS I would suggest VestaCP because it comes with only what is essential.

If low-cost is ok, the choice is getting much wider. i.e. lowest cost Plesk comes at 3.75 eur/mo in retail. I bet many hosters might have cPanel or Plesk or ISPManager included with their servers at no extra cost. That's a hidden cost surely, but still you won't need to pay separately.

Not for selling VPS's but for hosting and running our websites that are ours. Any recommendations?

For beginners who are new to VPS and server management, I would recommend you to use CentOS web panel, it is easy to use and add websites.
After installed it, you can add domain names to it and upload files to your websites to use immediately. There are some configurations you can concern but they are advanced configurations and you can study from hosting articles on the internet or asking some experts on the forum.
So with the advanced configurations I don't have to deal with those if I don't want to?

VestaCP is the best free one however I suggest you invest in the $5 extra a month and get a Plesk panel.
it is easy to use, has many functionalities and very affordable.

You can get the first 30days for free with Plesk as well.
Is the 30 day's free automatic when you get it or is that something that requires a promo code or something?

If you are looking for free I suggest you checkout Webmin, it's very decent and has a big open source community.
Is Webmin easy to use for a novice that only knows cpanel for the most part?

In addition to all the panels listed in this thread, check ISPConfig and Froxlor too. Pick the one that suits you the most. All of them have demos online.
I have heard of ISPconfig but I don't think that I have heard of Froxlor, is it easy to learn for a novice?

Check ISPconfig or Webmin. If you also consider a low-cost commercial panel, then you can probably also consider ISPmanager (4 EUR/month in retail).
That's a good price for ISPmanager, is it easy to use?

Well, I'd say it is a professional control panel more focused on those who know what they're doing, competing with cPanel, Plesk, DA and other well known systems. However, it is pretty easy to master after you go around for a couple of minutes. You can check the online demo on the website to check it.

Every control panel is easy to learn and is for novices, although setting the panel up may not be for novices.

So then they are all about the same as far as learning how to use them? Are there any that are easier to setup for novices?

They are all about the same. I can't really give you a specific answer or recommendation, since everything depends on your tastes and requirements.

About the setup - not really. All of them are just about the same in terms of difficulty of setup. If you use a managed provider then they'll install the control panel for you

Yes, that's what I would do and it's usually what I recommend others do.

Check the demos and see what works best for you

Why you suggest VestaCP as the best free panel while I don't see any advantages of it
Some recommended Centos web panel as a good free panel but I am not sure which one is the best.

Why do you suggest VestaCP? Does it have better features or is it better that the other free options?

I'm new to free control panels so any information is appreciated.

I'm recommending Webmin as well, if there's no budget for better alternatives

I would go for Webmin. For two good reasons.

One, Webmin has been used longer by more people. So it's a matured software. There will always be bugs but most would have been detected and rectified. Two, Webmin has a large community of users who can provide help, when needed.

I am not saying that the newer control panels are not good. It's just that I don't usually like to fiddle around with new things. It's like when Windows 7 came out. I was still using Windows XP because it still worked for me.
