I've heard that Google likes .html better than other extension when saying to a friendly url. But the real question is which one Google prefers .htm or .html extension? I'm building a new site, so I'd like to get it right for URL structure the first time. Thanks!

Not really, it's just a file extension. It should have zero impact on Google.

I would stick with the classic .html

Don't know which one is better, it's just an extension, many extensions you can see on the web such as: php, jsp, asp,...I see that people use html much more than htm, especially in wordpress & joomla site.

In my opinion, html should be official use on your urls.

You are talking about extension, it is exact, HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the standard markup language for creating web pages and we should use .html in every cases.
