I have been using cPanel and WHM on CentOS 6.x running on VPS server for a couple months now and am wondering whether Plesk would be a better solution for hosting websites on an EC2 instance. I am familiar with CentOS and do not want to change to Ubuntu or Debian. According to Plesk, one of their VPS licenses will work on an EC2 instance but they didn't provide any help regarding operating system selection.

I'd also like to know what the major differences are between Plesk and cPanel with respect to managing a VPS server... one that's actually in the AWS cloud.

The major difference I would say between cpanel and Plesk is the easy interface of Cpanel which is I believe better than Plesk and the Support level of Cpanel guys is way faster than Plesk.

Also before you switch to Amazon Ec2 with Plesk , read the limitations about IP , Subdomains and other features.

Plesk is by far better than cPanel - and especially on cloud services. Plesk requires much less resources and install faster. You can either launch Plesk as AMI in the AWS Marketplace or in the Azure Marketplace, or just install it yourself and add your own license. In comparison to cPanel which only works on CentOS & CloudLinux, Plesk works on all Linux distributions. So even if Ubuntu is the fastest growing Linux distribution, you can also keep CentOS or whatever OS you prefer. Even Windows ;-) The best way to get Plesk is just to search for "Plesk" in the AWS Marketplace. BTW, regarding the UI and UX - that's actually on of the things that most people prefer on Plesk. But in the end it is personal taste. Just given the statistics, people like Plesk UI more.

Plesk can easily be installed in any VPSes and on EC2 instance as well. Plesk supports many Linux OSes and of course CentOS. If you are not familiar to Plesk you can use one-click installation in order to quickly install Plesk and then later add any needed components by means of the Plesk installer either through web UI or CLI. If you have experience with Plesk you can quickly install Plesk using unattended mode of the Plesk installer - just specify all components you need. I have been working with Plesk for many years and can say that Plesk has all functionalities needed for web hosting and for VPS/server management. It would help to advice you, if you could specify some important functions, services, you would like to have and use.
Plesk is rapidly growing product and all Plesk and even cPanel customers can confirm it, in particular for the last 5 6 years. Just look at the Plesk release notes and you will see it. Plesk team listens to their customers and reacts quick enough. Plesk support team is great. I have never had any problem with it. Maybe I am lucky but I also heard many positive feedback on Plesk support from other Plesk users.

Conclusion: Plesk is better :icon_rock:

Plesk is the better option if your website executes ASP or .NET code

Plesk can run for both on Windows and Linux hosting so it is not surprised if it can run asp or .net codes.
I am running some PHP sites on a VPS used Plesk control panel and it is stable and good performance.
