A domain name is a name that defines on the internet. So, it is very important to find the best domain name. Once you found the best domain for yourself and registered it then your domain name is registered in the DNS (domain name system). By choosing the perfect domain name for your company, you will not miss the right thrust in the right direction. Here are eight ways to help you find the right domain name for your website

1. Be unique
Your business is unique, so look for a domain name that is just as unique. Why limit yourself to something ordinary? Your domain name is your identity, so choose a name that reflects your originality.

Any domain name that resembles another business causes a traffic loss on your website as it is confused with other pages. Instead of people calling your website consciously, this happens more inadvertently.

2. Select a name that is easy to remember
Let make it easier for your customers to remember your domain and better by choosing a short and simple name. Everything complicated will only lead to confusion and the visitors of your site will get lost or forgotten your web address. So look for something that is easy on the tongue.

Also, your name should be related to your services, so people connect the right thing when you hear the name, such as web hosting services or web hosting reviews then they will know you are related to web hosting field.

3. Invest in Domain Tools
Domain tools are tools for domain evaluation, domain monitoring, investigations and trademark protection. They will help you to find more qualitative names in a writing block.

4. Avoid copyright infringement
Copyright infringement occurs if you use the work of another person without permission and consent and violates the law. Any protected phrases or names can not be used in a domain name. You can check your domain name at any time through a free copyright-checking website, which takes about 2 minutes. By letting your domain names run through your databases, examine whether the name is certain: http://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/ and http://www.copyright.gov/records/.

5. Use relevant keywords
Use relevant keywords to improve your search database ranking. For example "web hosting forum" uses the keyword 'hosting', which makes the search for web hosting providers or web hosting discussions since the name makes sense.

6. Make sure your domain name is designed before you buy it
Be sure to read your domain name in different contexts before you register and buy it. Because once you've bought it, you can not change it. To determine if your name is appropriate, please ask your family, friends or acquaintances for honest feedback.

7. Avoid numbers and punctuation marks
You want a name that is easy to remember and does not confuse people who are looking for you with the help of search engines. If you have a more complex domain name, go quickly to it and lose lots of website traffic. Exceptions are, of course, if the business name contains a number.

8. Be cautious with domain extension
A domain ending is the suffix at the end of each web address. for examples .com, .net, .org, .edu and co.uk. Some of these domains serve a particular purpose. Below are a few examples and their purpose:

.com Commercial and non-commercial side
.co.uk Commercial and non-commercial side in the UK
.net Infrastructure page, for ordinary: technical
.org Non-profit organizations
.edu educational institutions
.me Personal Namespace
.biz Businesses

A domain address with .com is the best choice. If you really want to change the suffix, just do it. But try to stay, even if it means that you need to change your domain name easily.

A final note: you have checked all the points, but be quick, because domain names are sold out quickly! If you hesitate too long, you probably have only a name that does not fit your business perfectly. If you have a domain name in mind, but this is already taken, you supplied domain registrar with alternatives.

I think it's a great idea to bounce the domain name off friends and family members, before purchasing. You never know when you (I) might think a certain name is great, but you find out everyone else thinks it stinks. Also, having a keyword in the domain is great for seo.

Real nice tips and I especially like the tips below as those are a couple that I put the most priority on.

1. Be unique
Your business is unique, so look for a domain name that is just as unique. Why limit yourself to something ordinary? Your domain name is your identity, so choose a name that reflects your originality.
I always try to do this whenever I buy domains that I am planning on building a website on. I want my domain to be unique to it's website and not just one in a crowd.

Any domain name that resembles another business causes a traffic loss on your website as it is confused with other pages. Instead of people calling your website consciously, this happens more inadvertently.
Another good tip. I was told by someone else a while back that he calls it "Leakage" since potential visitors are not going to where you want them to go, your website.

2. Select a name that is easy to remember
Let make it easier for your customers to remember your domain and better by choosing a short and simple name. Everything complicated will only lead to confusion and the visitors of your site will get lost or forgotten your web address. So look for something that is easy on the tongue.
This one I have seen many people not follow. Some people like to be too unique and they come up with a domain name that is hard to spell or has some other flaw. Unique is good but crazy is not.

Don't forget about this!

Nice detailed guide there. The domain being easy to remember is an important one, especially users who are not great at spelling & grammar. Also best not to use domains with hyphens as it isn't even supposed to help with SEO like many say it does, e.g., you could lose traffic by using domains if you use hyphens and don't own domain without hyphens.

This "Avoid copyright infringement" is one that MANY people that are new to domains and even some that aren't don't understand or even realize is important when registering a domain.

I have been in the domain business for a very long time and see people registering domains that are trademark violations and they registered them with the intent of profiting from the trademark of someone else. This is a bad idea and can cost you more than just the loss of your domain if you are not lucky enough to realize the issue and just deleting/dropping the domain.

Always be smart and look up trademarks just to be safe when registering a domain that you hold valuable! ;)

A domain name must be able to connect with the audience of concern and must be such that it must protect and fortify the brand. The domain name must be such that it does not misinterpret into slang terms and must be able to grab local attention. Check if the regular domain extensions are suitable or the new gTLDs goes better with the domain name.

That's true and some people don't realize that one domain can look differently to different people. Some people don't realize that domain names do not have spaces so sometimes the proper meaning is missed.

Someone registered ChildrensExchange.com WITHOUT realizing that it also looks like ChildrenSexChange.com. The site owner had to wind up selling the domain and now it's just parked.

Always have to make sure your domain doesn't have other possible meanings. ;)

A domain name must be short and catchy, that will make it killer and memorable.
It's like when you go to work, and you hear the same commercial that gets attached to your brain.
If you make it easy to remember, then your domain will come up really fast.
Seriously, long and exotic names can be unique, but if I can't remember it I will drop it off instantly.

These are great checklist. And may I ask, when you try to create one, is there any way I can confirm if my domain name will be a hit or not? Is this like a business name wherein you will just know it's good once you register it?

When coming up with a good domain name, you have to take the same route as coming up with a name for something creative, such as a band. This list is very close to my checklist when it comes up to coming up with names for certain creative things. Props to you!

I will add some more points -

1. Make sure you will choose the domain name related to your site. That is if you would like to create the site related to games then from it's name, end-user should get the purpose of the site.

2. Make sure to choose the domain extension carefully, If you are developing the educational site then the extension should be .edu so it will clarify the use of your website.

3. You can use country specific extensions too.

4. Use the top rated keywords while assigning name to your website so it will help you to rank your website in SEO.

5. Domain name should be short and sweet, easy to remember. It should be easy to remember and catchy. I would suggest it should not be more than 20 o 25 characters. Because visitor should remember the name of your website easily. If it's too lengthy then no one remember it and as a result, no visitors, no money. Make sure it convey the purpose of your website.

Domain name popularity depends on factors like visitors, alexa, design, architecture, contents on the website , images and number of links pointing to your website, social site linking. You will need to review the all links connected to your website. You should remove the bad links that is spam links. Internal linking should be proper.

Hope this will help you.

Interesting ideas. However, it might be a good idea to look at some of the well-known domain names. What comes to mind, off-hand?

How about Google?

I doubt if Google would fit into most of the tips given in the OP. The only thing it probably fits is the part about copyright. So how did Google become such a well-known domain name? Content, my friend, content. Content is king. Content has always been king and always will be king.

So, don't fret if you cannot think of some fantastic domain name. Actually just any name would do, as long as it's not already taken and it has no similiarity to any other known trademarks. Just as an example, I don't think it would be a good idea to use Cooler Cougar. Speak it out aloud and see how close it sounds to a well-known trademark.

So, what happens if you can only think of a name that's so mundane and common like, maybe, John Smith. Actually I think John Smith is already taken. Whatever your domain name is, concentrate on the content. It's the content which makes a domain name great, not the other way round.

Think of it this way. Facebook didn't make Mark a billionaire because of the name. It's what Mark put into Facebook which made all the billions.
