I used Digital Ocean but not ever tried or heard of Heroku. For DO, it's a pretty good service but since it is unmanaged cloud hosting, I left it and used a managed VPS for my blogs.
If you have read reviews on this forum, I would recommend OVH, Digital Ocean and Vultr, they are good cloud hosting providers. Other than that, checking these sections

to find out more. Hope it helps!

I have a pretty decent experience with digital ocean. Their servers are good and uptime is pretty high however the support which is very important now days is lacking a little bit however you do have to take in to consideration that I was on an unmanged plan for testing purposes only.
I have personally never used Heroku.

A lot of times as companies expand, they quickly realize that their only way of "scaling" is to make existing employees do more work, sometimes at the cost of customer service. We see this with HostGator all the time. Doesn't mean they offer a bad service, as many would agree about with DigitalOcean.

Maybe but if you are using a shared hosting at HostGator, you can use the money to buy a VPS on the forum and getting better features and supports than HostGator's services.

I didn't have a chance to get support from them because I used their service in a short time and it has no problem on my VPS.

Never heard of Heroku which should speak for itself. DigitalOcean can be trusted with mainline projects but if I were you i'd wait for someone to see this thread who has actually used HeroKu because I haven't so cant speak on them. NowADays everyone is using the word cloud even if they have 1 server using raid-10 and selling VM's from it. So id be inclined to checkout both of the companies full infrastructure and go from there if I were you.
