I used Xampp or Appserv network years ago for testing purposes and run temporarily php sites on my PC. They was a great little software for creating a local server. What's the preferred method for creating a local server in 2017 though? or should I buy a shared or VPS to check my sites how they will work online? which is better idea?

Will appreciate suggestions and recommendations. Thanks!

You are better off hosting your site's on an actual web server vs on a home server!!

You can find shared hosting and even VPS's are very affordable these days, and a lot more stable/secure/redundant then a home PC/Server

If you really want to do this, I would go with virtual box, but as RDO said a VPS is very cheap these days. Not really any reason to run your own local server in 2016.

In my personal opinion, the virtual home server will be the best when you are designing a website and want to check them quickly on browsers, it loads really awesome and can give you results as fastest as possible..

If you are wanting to check a real CMS with functions on it then I would recommend you should go with a real host, maybe a shared or a VPS hosting.

If your looking for a cheap solution go wiht namecheap for like $9 bucks a year for shared hosting. If you'd like a VPS OVH is pretty darn cheap although it will take days to get answer to support tickets. Just surf around till you find the feel/vibe your looking for.

The only way to get the exact testing results is to host the site(s) on an actual web server (shared hosting account/vps/dedicated server) There are too many factors to count that would be different from your own PC versus a hosting companies server.

You can easily get a vps or even a shared hosting account for a month for little $ for testing purposes.

You could run a server at home but it's recommended anymore but I'd be happy to assist you the best way that I can in doing so. What is the purpose of wanting to run a server at home? Are you looking at doing it for personal or business use. Many companies back in the day started with running servers at home, and now a lot of them own offices and datacenters. Including the company i work for... It all starts with a dream!

It'd cost you more in electric to run it from home PC/server. A web hosting account would be better.
