Hey,

I have a website lets say "mydomain.com". I want to create a download server separated from my website, which users can directly download files from it. the server will use the subdomain: "download.mydomain.com", then users will allow direct downloading files from it. example for a download link: "download.mydomain.com/file_xxx.exe"

I need unlimited traffic and something like 30-50GB Storage (and DDos protection if possible)

Should I buy VPS? if yes, can you recommend me one?

Thanks.

Hi Dorel

This is simple to do, yes I would recommend a VPS as your download server.

Get yourself a VPS
Create the sub domain in your domains dns zone pointing at your VPS IP

I would advise checking with your chosen provider about what type of files you will be hosting as many providers forbid the use of service for malware. virus, copyright or the distribution of other types of files. What sort of files are you downloading from your site ?

Hey LJSHost,

The host is for serving mostly software files and some free games, all legit from authors sites.
Can you recommend me a good VPS service (ljshost.com is offering such hosting)? I prefer one with good protection

You can find a range of providers in the offers section here
I would advise emailing some hosts and talk to them about your needs also check the complete pricing, many offers exclude control panels which is advised if your new to having your own server.

Good morning,

I recommend you to do this on a storage VPS/dedicated server, their network are optimized for big downloads.

I need a service that allows PayPal payment.

What about Dreamhost, they have pretty good hosting packages, the only problem with them is that they offer their own panel, and there is no way to test it. Had anyone tried it?

Of course is you need a VPS and more storage for it to create a download server for users on your websites.

Forget 1and1, dreamhost, hostgator, bluehost, godaddy host because I used these hosting in the past and their quality will reduce time by time...try to find a VPS package for you from a small web hosting company and you will have better support.

I chose one VPS on this forum https://forumweb.hosting/131-vps-hosting-offers and felling good now, its unmanaged VPS and I could do everything I wanted. Choosing specifications depends on what you need for your websites.

Good luck!

It would be best to use a provider who offers backup storage, backup hosting, offsite backups or whatever they call it, but basically it's just an account with the usual access but with rsync/ssh/FTP protocols included and you can use the storage however you want unlike you can with regular hosting accounts where you aren't able to use the account to store files and the like.

So check out some "Backup Hosting" type offers, some include cPanel which makes it easier for you to manage everything like crons, ssh keys, etc. Most importantly, it should work out cheaper this way and be a lot more reliable when using the right provider.

Good morning,

I don't have any experiences with 1and1's VPS. But I will advise you Backupsy (from Nodisto) or Kimsufi (but it have only 100 Mbps network speed).

Hey, thank you for the comments, currently, I have bought a VPS (100Mbps).
I may try a new one in the future.

A VPS with 1GB will have helped the data transfer faster if the other connection has 1GB onnection too, which is very useful for moving large amounts of data. 1GB is 10x faster than 100MB connection.
