Have a site that doesn't suck.

Limit ads above the fold.

Make sure your content is not gibberish, spun, or piss poor Engiish.

Also, and I'm noticing a ton of bloggers getting hit with this, OVER-OPTIMIZATION.

Look at 4 things: URL, Meta TItle, Meta Desc., H1

1 word keywords should not be in the Meta description IMHO and with what I am seeing.

2 word keywords are ok one time in each.

And steer clear of 3 word phrases that are consistent in 2 of these spots.

Another thing sites are getting slapped for happened during a "phantom" update, and is linked to mobile and how the sites are realigned on mobile. Putting in H1 directly above an image is a big no-no now. Google does not value images as content, but does videos. Putting an H1 above videos is Ok. A ton of bloggers I know just took a hit from this "phantom" filter and no one could figure out what the hell was going on. Well with the new mobile algo, and sites being aligned differently on mobile and placing the H1 directly above the images, were triggering the phantom algo that was slapping bloggers left and right.
