I use MySQL, and it works well on large databases also. It is very easy to use and beginner friendly also.

I've only worked with MySQL before, so I can't offer too much insight into the other two. However, in my experience with MySQL, it works very well with large databases, and as Cierra said, was pretty easy to use (and for me, that was a must as I didn't know much about MySQL at the time).

I've got no experience with Percona, but I do with both MySQL and MariaDB (which really is a drop-in replacement of MySQL).
Both are fine for both small and large projects - but my personal preference is MariaDB, due to the many performance improvements that have been made. Also, it's fully compatible with normal MySQL operating procedure.

I agree with MightWeb, we have updates all of our servers to utilize MariaDB and in turn have seen a huge performance increase. Keep in mind that MariaDB does use a little bit more initial memory, however with the right configuration it will blow others out of the water. People should know that in the coming year or two Oracle will be discontinuing MySQL Community Edition (the free version everyone has been using for so many years) to focus on their Enterprise Edition. This is one of the main reasons that MariaDB was launched as a drop-in replacement
