There is no real reason that you would need to utilize Windows based hosting platforms unless you require the capability to utilize languages such as ASP .NET. Even still, some Linux based platforms will utilize software such as Mono which will allow you to use .NET on Linux. There can also be many disadvantages when utilizing windows based hosting, therefore it is recommended to use Linux primarily.

It is better to select a Web host based on its features and services rather than on what operating system is running on its Web servers, as the difference between the two is very little. However, if your Web site particularly requires a certain language due to the programmers you work with it would be prudent to check for system compatibility before subscribing to a Web host.

Nice use of CNET by the way ;) However, you couldn't be more wrong, no offense intended at all. Most of todays most powerful, reliable and respected software for web content delivery are primarily built around the Linux family of operating systems. Sure, windows is great and all, but I would never recommend running your web-site off of a Windows based server unless you absolutely need to be able to fully support ASP or Cold Fusion.

The problem with Windows is it has a very big overhead and loves to munch on your resources. You have very little room for customization, optimization and even organization on a Windows based system due to it's complexity and closed-source status. Linux however is open source, widely supported, can have next to no overhead, is fully customizable, easy to maintain, optimize and secure. I can list things off for the next two hours on the benefits of Linux over Windows, but I'm not going to.

Windows

Pros:
  1. Uses very little resources to run
  2. Open Source
  3. Easy to Maintain, Optimize, Secure
  4. More widely used as a web platform
  5. Endless list of supported, powerful software
  6. Huge community of developers
  7. Wide range of control panels
  8. Used by majority of websites
  9. Powers Facebook, Google, Yahoo & WMS
  10. Scalable
  11. Extremely powerful & fast
  12. Supports nearly EVERY programming language
  13. Android and IOS are Linux based
  14. Complete customization
  15. Sometimes referred to as the Holy OS
  16. Blows Windows out of the water any day

Cons:
  1. Consol based Control
  2. Very big learning curve

Windows

Pros:
  1. Full Desktop Environment
  2. Full support of ASP .NET
  3. Full support of ColdFusion
  4. Full support of Java

Cons:
  1. Vulnerable to Windows Security Flaws
  2. Difficult to Maintain, Manage & Deploy
  3. Uses a lot of resources
  4. Very little support for popular software
  5. Limited control panels
  6. Easily gets viruses
  7. Slow
  8. Needs reboots after updates
  9. Needs reboots for software installs
  10. Needs reboots
  11. Can be very insecure

difference between Linux and Windows hosting

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is more secure and more efficient than Windows. Linux also has more of the features web designers expect, so unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.

Windows applications which require a Windows server:
ASP.NET
MSSQL
MS Access
Visual Basic development
Remote Desktop (dedicated servers only)

Being a newbie, I'd start with a Linux web hosting package. It really depends though on what you plan to post online.
