To Hold or Release Unused Domain Names?

Hello everyone,

I find myself pondering a dilemma that I suspect many of you have faced at one point or another in your digital endeavors. Over the years, I've accumulated a handful of domain names. Each was purchased with a vision in mind, projects that ranged from personal blogs to potential business ventures. However, life and shifting priorities meant that some of these domains are now sitting idle, without an active website attached to them.

As I evaluate my portfolio of digital assets, I'm grappling with the decision of whether to maintain ownership of these unused domains or to let them go. The cost of renewal, although not exorbitant, adds up, especially considering the lack of immediate use. Yet, there's always that lingering thought – what if I find the perfect project for one of these domains in the future? Or what if their value appreciates over time?

What is your advice?

Sell them simple if you don't use it.

Assess if holding onto them aligns with your current goals and priorities and if not, it may be beneficial to let go and free up resources for more active projects.

It's quite the pickle, isn't it? I've been there too. Think about which domains genuinely spark excitement or have a real shot at being used in the future. If there's one you can't stop thinking about or has potential gold in its future, maybe hold onto it. But if it's just collecting digital dust and costing you money, perhaps it's time to let it go or even make a few bucks by selling it. No point in hanging onto something that doesn't light you up or have a clear purpose, right?

Totally get where you're coming from. It's like holding onto a bunch of keys without knowing which door they might open someday. If the renewal costs aren't breaking the bank, maybe hang onto the ones that really resonate with you or have potential value. For the rest, you could let them go or even try selling them. Sometimes, letting go frees up mental space and resources for new opportunities. And hey, if a brilliant idea strikes, there's a whole world of new domain names out there waiting for you!

Calculate the cost of renewing each domain against its current and potential future value. Then, determine if the investment aligns with your budget and priorities.

Good point. Most domains can be released though, with so many TLDs out there most companies wont buy the domain from you and just choose an alternative. Keep the ones that are definitely "possibly profitable"

If you don't accumulate a good history for these domains, don't accumulate rankings and recognition for them, then their value will not increase, their value will fall, it may be better to spend more time selling but ask for more money than just wasting time and then possibly selling at a very low price price

I would hold onto the domains if I see potential benefits in developing a website with them or selling them for profit later. If a domain has a memorable name or aligns with a future project idea, it might be worth the renewal cost. On the other hand, if there's no foreseeable use and it's just an added expense, it might be better to let it go. It really depends on the potential you see in each domain and your long-term plans.

If you’ve got unused domain names and you’re wondering whether to keep them or let them go, here’s a simple way to decide. If the domains might be useful for future projects or if they have good potential for resale, it might be worth holding onto them. However, if you’re not planning to use them and they’re just sitting there, it could be a good idea to release them and save on renewal fees. Also, consider if the domains have any value to others, sometimes you can sell them for a decent amount. Weigh the costs and potential benefits, and make a choice that fits your needs.
