Serveral reasons, most will attack your concurent, another one is someone will do it for money, i.e ddosing you and asking for money to stop.

DDOS are mainly done to networks ,Websites or Servers.

The attack should be initiated after find any vulnerabilities in softwares, website plugins on the servers or to a server/networks IPs open to public.

This could be done to a specific networks or to any random targets, after hacking different remote network stations and launch the DDOS attack from these stations. For that reasons in most cases, the origin is untraceable .

The purpose is to degrade the reputation of any critical service running on server/network, to make a adverse impact on the businesses by competitors.

Either this could be done by a motivated hacker or by any automated programs launched to specific targets . [Some freaky coders , with no reasons also do this for their own satisfaction ]

Now a days there are lots of CDN services like [cloudFlare] to prevent DDOS, also most of the data center are equipped with effective Hardware and WAF firewalls against the DDOS attack.

I tried ddos protection from cloudflare but to be honest, it is not good for user experience, i lost more visitors to my site.

1. If it is a free subscription and your visitors still feels uncomfortable you can contact CloudFlare and talk for any better solutions.
2. As an alternative solution, you may try any WAF[Application Firewall] for protection.
3. Or else it advisable to contact your service provider for any kind of HW firewall solutions to filter the traffic.

I only heard about DDOS, The objective of a DDoS attack is to prevent legitimate users from accessing your website. For a DDoS attack to be successful, the attacker needs to send more requests than the victim server can handle.
