Hi, guys!

Which of these two cloud storage services do you think is better? Most people are using mainstream storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. today. I want to try a different service because I want my files to be more secure and I want to have more control over it.

Can you share some advantages and disadvantages for ownCloud and Nextcloud? Which you think offers a better service?

Thanks!

OwnCloud and NextCloud are self hosted. So you will need a VPS/Cloud instance (or a shared hosting package) to install your owncloud/Nextcloud installation.

I have used owncloud in the pass and was very happy with it... I have since moved to nextcloud... Both offer a nice and stable and easy to setup product.

Thanks for your detailed review of both services. I see that I have to get myself a VPS to start setting up.

May I know why you switched from ownCloud to NextCloud? Do they offer a slightly better service than ownCloud? Thanks!

Nextcloud is a newer thing.
It is cheaper and more supported by operative systems.
It usually has no paid features inside and you can host it on your server.
Basically the difference is in price and some platforms that can support it, among many other things, of course.
I guess most people would go with NextCloud.

Nextcloud cannot be cheaper than Owncloud, because both of them are available for free.
Paid services are only for big companies and offers start with 50+ users.
And Nextcloud is only a fork of Owncloud initiated by Franck Karlitschek (Owncloud founder) because both projects are open-source, but OC use restrictive licenses which doesn't allow the community to really take part of the development.

Currently there are more new features on NextCloud because the community followed Franck Karlitschek and anybody can take part of the project.

If it is storage you want, why not try out Aws S3 storage instead? I have been using to store all my website's assets
