Hey there, We are looking at replacing our old WAN firewall/router with either PFSense or VYOS. I have been Googling around for information but I can't seem to find a solid answer. Can anyone please tell me Vyos and Pfsense - Which one is better? and why?

The main difference is probably the ease of use. Pfsense provide a web interface to manage your network, firewall and other settings when Vyos work only from command line.

You can also look on https://opnsense.org/ which is forked from Pfsense, and can be easier to configure.

I prefer Pfsense because it is flexible and easy to maintain from its GUI. It has many features that can really help provide the solutions you need to your problems. I f you dont want to go with Pfsense you should atleat look the fact that its free and fast.

VyOS and pfSense are both open-source network operating systems that can be used as firewalls or routers. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and the choice between the two will depend on the specific needs and requirements of your network.

VyOS is a fork of Vyatta, a commercial router OS that was discontinued. It has a strong focus on routing protocols and is often used in large-scale enterprise networks. VyOS supports BGP, OSPF, and other routing protocols, making it a good choice for service providers or organizations with complex networking needs. It also has a CLI-based configuration, which can be more familiar to experienced network administrators.

pfSense, on the other hand, is a firewall-focused network OS that is popular in small and medium-sized businesses. It has a web-based graphical user interface that makes it easy to use and manage. pfSense supports VPN, proxy, and load balancing, making it a good choice for secure remote access and traffic management. It also has a large community of users, which means there is a wealth of information and support available online.

In conclusion, both VyOS and pfSense are capable network operating systems, and the choice between them will depend on the specific needs and requirements of your network. If you have complex routing needs and a highly-skilled network team, VyOS may be a better choice. However, if you need a simple, user-friendly firewall with strong VPN and proxy support, pfSense may be a better option.
