I understand that not all of us have English as their native language. Some learned in school and some have been raised speaking it. Although we can all communicate well with each other, not everything said will follow the general grammar rules.

So many of us have something to write but our grammar can make a post to be of low quality even if the message is meaningful and expressed well. Starting a blog is very helpful and one can improve their writing skills with time. Do you think one needs to be fluent in English for them to start blogging?

I think it will depend on your target readers. While writing in English will help you reach out to a lot of people, there is no reason why you shouldn't write in your native language.

For example, if you are trying to start a blog whose main purpose is to educate people from a certain country whose majority of the population is not English speaking then it best to use the local language. In this case, writing in English might actually defeat the purpose of the blog.

Yes you are right. I see a lot of bloggers which are not native English speaker and sometimes you need to read it twice to understand it. This makes it more human. A Blog in my opinion lives from media content, meaning photos, graphics or videos. It shall not be pure text, so this way you get a little around the need of being perfect in English. However also we have a lot of tools which can help people. For example grammerly, a great tool which helps a lot to make your english look a little more perfect, did you ever try thisone ?

Nothing is compulsory. I think though it's a good idea to have good English If you're writing for an English audience. Communication is very important, that's why they are 3 and 4-year courses at the university. With a million blogs out there no one has the time to struggle with your article or blog. Your writing needs to be understandable, precise and needs to communicate your message as quickly as possible, especially if you're selling a product or service. Most audiences get annoyed with less than perfect English and stop reading. Everybody knows their strengths if your English is not that good write your content and hire an editor.

I believe having a good command of the language you are writing is expected for any blogger. This way you can present your thoughts in an organized way where readers can easily grasp message you are conveying. Also, pay attention to proper grammar and misspelled words as presence of many errors even if you have a good content will not reflect well on the writer. The app Grammarly comes in handy to check on your grammar errors.

For me, not really because not all of us are native english speakers or not all of us are fluent in speaking english. In my opinion the most important thing in blogging is the content or the idea or message that you can get through it. You don't need to be fluent in english and it's okay to get or to have a wrong grammar, you just need to learn what is the correct spelling and a little knowledge in grammatization but it's better if you are fluent in english.

"English is without a doubt the actual universal language. It is the world's second largest native language."

So, 70 percent of the population here on earth, can speak or understand english. For me, it is not really compulsory to write your blog/articles in english, it depends on you, of which you are comfortable. Anyway there is already a translator. But sometimes you can't depend on the translator cause there is a time that it can't really translate. Just like on facebook translator, uggggh, nevermind for that, I know that you can relate sometimes. :icon_mrgreen:

But it is also good for you to write in english, so that, the other native/audience/readers can understand your articles.

What articles/blogs you write? :)

I believe as with everything else we can improve as we go along. English is one of the things we improve on the more we use it. Also as one of my mantras say Criticism is always good, it depends on how you take it. If some one critique you about your grammar or formatting style, take that and improve on yourself for the next time.

In my own opinion, it is not compulsory for someone to be fluent in English before they start blogging. Since a blog doesn't contain purely only text, it consists of pictures, widgets. But since 70 % of the population in the entire world can understand. The main point here is that as long as you can express yourself in your blog and deliver it perfectly then it doesnt matter if youre not fluent in english.

Your english should not be fleunt, it should be understandable. There is a famous saying: practice makes perfect. And writing blog posts is a good way to practice your language skills.

I think it's necessary to have a good command in English whenever you wanted to start a blog. It is obvious that online, we understand everyone conversing with English language.

Practicing correct English whether in writing or in speaking will help a lot in your expression as a blogger. There are lots of ways to practice English, such as looking at dictionaries and thesaurus.

I've read from some other forums that non-native English speakers tend to lack substance in their articles because they do not have a wide range of the English language. But I disagree with them because at the same time not all native English speakers are good content writers. So naturally, not all non-native English speakers are bad either.

In the world of blogging and content writing as a job, I think it IS essential that a person is good in the English language but not compulsory. First, to reach a wider crowd in the internet, of course you need to be able to speak the language the world understands, and that is English. If you are a blogger, or want to be a blogger, I don't think it's a requirement that you MUST be a fluent in English right away. You can learn this through constant writing and studying the basics of the English grammar. But when you want to make writing a career, then I believe being fluent in English (even though you're a native speaker) is a requirement.

Maybe. Because for me as long you give your thought nicely and comprehensible, grammar is not important. Also it depends on your target readers. For example if I am a Japanese, if my target is my same nationality i should prefer to use my native language so that i can attract more readers of my blog. But If you want global, then you should definitely use English because it is a universal language that you can use to communicate no matter what nationality will be your future readers as long as they comprehend the content of your blog, regardless if not grammatically correct.

Blogging is not like novel writing but it does require correct usage of grammar and vocabulary so the majority can understand without getting annoyed. There are tools available which can help you in highlighting these mistakes in your content.

One need not be perfect in English grammar, we have tools to check grammatical mistakes, spellings, etc.
To write a blog, one should know how to put their thoughts on paper, language barrier can be easily overcome.

It all depend on your target audience. If your target audience does not speak english then you don't have to be fluent in English to start a blog. However, if you are targeting a wider audience, i mean going global, then you should be fluent in English. This is not something difficult to do because you can learn through various mediums. Not being able to express yourself in english will affect the contents of write up and this could be boring to the readers.

It's best to write and start a blog with a good grammar. A blog post reflects your personality. A well organize idea will convince a reader without confusion. It will hold one's attention and interest.
