Even though I have basic web designing skills, I am not a designer. Since my skill is limited, I cannot create a versatile website. I want to hire a designer to develop my website. When I talked to a local designer, he stated his price. Before, I hited him I did a little research and found that O can hire a designer on Fiverr on half of the asking price (the price asked by gthe local designer). Can I trust a Fiverr designer? (The designers I have short listed have good ratings and reviews).

You can probably find cheap services on Fiverr, but for large projects, I find that I would much rather have a more formal business relationship with design/development team. Since Fiverr discourages any communication between buyer and seller outside of their platform, you may find it difficult to reach your developer if you later want to ask a question or would like for them to provide further services.

That being said, I have had Fiverr work done for a variety of small tasks I simply did not want to invest the time or money to have our staff or developers work on such as email signature and web banner designs...All of these have turned out well and I am comfortable using Fiverr for these types of jobs.

A good designer will be able to inform you of what direction your site needs to go. They will bridge the gap between what designers know and what clients need to know about their particular design. If most or all of your business is coming from your website, I would not recommend going the cheap route on this, especially if it is a one-time fee. Having a design created for you that is very inexpensive but not delivering the "call-to-action" results you could be receiving means less revenue for you. For example, I've seen a lot of people like an inexpensive logo design created for them but they don't know why and they may like it for all the wrong reasons... A good designer will not create this problem for you. You can also negotiate the price with your local designer. It couldn't hurt.
