Hi everyone, I am thinking about doing a blog, but since it is my first blog ever, I don't want to spend a lot of money on it, (I might not like blogging so I might stop after a month) so my Question is, Is free sites like Wix worth doing for a blog? and would you recommend it for a long term blog?

Thanks, everyone!

Hey Jeric,

Probably not long term, they are somewhat limited and you won't have the same amount of control that a hosted WordPress install or something similar would give you.

You can always find a cheap web hosting plan and install WordPress via Softaculous. From there you can install theme and your up and running in probably the same amount of time. Using WordPress or any other blogging CMS will allow you at later dates to implement ad placements or sponsorship areas for revenue if that is something you may be thinking about when you have a decent amount of traffic coming in.

However if you are looking to just have a go and see how you get on with it, a free option will work great for that. Maybe have a look at tumblr, WordPress (free), blogger, ghost for other alternatives to Wix.

Good luck with your chosen direction!

For blogging, I will not advice you to go for wix, though it can be good option if you want for static content but you will never able to move from them if you are unhappy with them.

On the other hand wordpress is good and better option, I will simply get a hosting and install wordpress in it like Tom mentioned.

I used Wix and it was really slow, even I could not edit anything on my blog.
I would go with Wordpress or Blogspot instead. You can buy a .com domain and pointing to your blog on these blog platforms but anyway I always like using self hosting with paid services.

mmm...if you want start with a free solution i suggest you blogger or wordpress.com

BOth are very big community and increase your visitatore free but in long term wordpress.com is very convenience because if you decide you can choose to buy a name domain or move in your hosting and migrate all post and comments.

Hi Jeric,

Wix is a fully hosted platform but it comes with a lot of limitations. You are basically locked into their ecosystem. Which is rather limited.

I agree with CaygriWeb. Start on wordpress.org (watch out not wordpress.com). It is the best free CMS out there by magnitude. It also offers you the most flexibility to the extent that it can grow with your needs with the massice plugin ecosysitem they have at your disposal.

Please bear in mind that the bare minimum in terms of cost is a shared hosting plan that you will need to run Wordpress.

Hope to talk soon!

Start as you mean to go on. If you are going to go with a simple solution like Wix, you will create yourself more issues down the line when you want to upgrade.

I agree totally with this one. If you're looking to make something that you're never going to change, and won't interact with much then you're ok-ish with Wix. Otherwise, upgrade now to something like wordpress (it still won't necessarily cost you).

I would suggest, instead of going with WIX, use the in-built CMS in which you'll get one click installation as well as easy to setup the site using one by one easy procedure.

If you will develop site with them then there are some DNS settings too which you will need to update in addition.

If you would like to develop simple blog then go with the WordPress, you ill get too may themes, colors anb easy setup without any hassle.

Hope this will help you. :)

As you have written that you are just starting with blogging and you are not sure whether you won't stop after a month, then I think it's better to move step by step. In other words, I guess Wix will be suitable for your needs, at least for some time. Or, you can try SitePad website builder it also has great themes, widgets and a lot more. But, the truth is that most people prefer using WordPress, so maybe you should also think about this option. No matter what you choose, I wish you good luck in this new undertaking.

Wix is very good for building eCommerce sites. If you are using it for your eCommerce store, you will enjoy every bit of it. I've tried it for blogging before but I don't really like the functions, I rather prefer Zoho site builder which is similar to Wix.
So, I advise you to start with the free WordPress, Zoho or Blogger platform.

Hi everyone, and thank you all for your replies, this has given me great options to try and see which one I will use and try first> Also Linuxse for the clearing wordpress.org and not .com, that would have totally got me lol. I will look into all of this through the next first few days. And in the future, I was thinking about doing e-commerce or affiliate marketing but I thought I try with a simple blog first lol.

Jeric,

Good question here.
I have a WIX page which I just use for general info and my resume'. I do not use it for blogging, but I link my blogs and other sites to the WIX page, and it does generate some traffic for me. However, after I read the posts here, I realized that this could cause me issues later when I want to upgrade, and so, I am not going to put maximum efforts and resources in WIX as my hub.

I prefer Wordpress over Wix for several reasons.WordPress gives you tons of flexibility with tools. However, a lot of time is required to filter out stuff which you might not need.

WordPress is more powerful when compared against Wix.You will need to spend some time on maintenance though. The issue with WordPress is that it's not really beginner friendly.

No, sir. If you want quality and quantity, it's always better to choose paid web hosting. Reason, they are legit and professionals in their work. They know what they are doing and have been in the market for a long time. They'll guranatee traffic which may not be possible with free web hosting where traffic may be fluctuating. Also they offer better services and functionalities when compared to a free hosting site.

If its a hobby project which u intend to host with a "free" provider rather look into cheap yearly plans, it wont be free but atleast that way you are the customer and not the product.

Free web hosting sites are great if you're just starting out in the world of blogging and website creating. It's a great platform to test out the waters.

I myself have started with free web host providers like webs.com, weebly, and blogger. When I was ready to take the next step, I availed of a web hosting package from a certain web host provider. It opened my world to a whole lot of customisation options.

Is it good for long term blogging? If it's just for fun, and nothing serious, yes. But if you treat it as more than a hobby, then it's not good for long term purposes. If you have the means, try out a paid web host plan. You'll like it.

Sites such as Wix are great for personal/small website. Business or large websites I would always recommend paid hosting without watermarks on your website.

I have used Wix in the past and while it is easy to use, it is not the best solution for a blog. Wix is better suited for a personal web site that doesn't need to be edited often, since Wix is a bit slow. If you want to build a blog and you don't want to pay any money I recommend wordpress.com or blogger. I personally have only used blogger and find it easy to use, it offers different themes that can be customize to your personal needs. It is a good option for someone who has never written a blog before.

I have used Wix and I don't like it that much because of so many limitations and also it is a bit slow. So, if you are going to start a blog I would prefer blogger because you are a fresher and this is quite simple to use and effective in the long run if you want free service. I have been using blogger for many years and I love it. Otherwise, Wordpress is the best. So, choose wisely. :)

WIx is a very good company but lets face it there is no such thing as a free lunch. Anything free is a way of you getting a taster for the service and then dealing you in to pay more $$ for more better services
