Hello,
I am involved in Web Hosting business. So I have more or less knowledge about Web Hosting. Dedicated server is mostly used in Web Hosting services. But can you please tell me what are the other ways people use dedicated servers?

Think of anything you can do on the Internet or a computer and you have your answers.

1. web applications for business / remote cloud desktops for business
2. Gaming
3. Private email server
4. Dedicated database server
5. VPN / Proxy

I would say the bulk of dedicated server are just for hosting or web applications. Interested to see what other suggestions people come up with.

If you're running a big site, shared hosting won't do and you need your own server. It's your own server, just like your own PC at home, you can do whatever you want that is possible with it, as long as it doesn't violate your host's TOS of course.

You can use a dedicated server for anything that requires data and the internet:

Cloud Hosting
Music streaming
Video streaming
Voice over IP
Facebook App
Messaging / Chat / Video Conference
Online Gaming
Matchmaking for iOS/Android games
File / Backup storage
Development Data repositories

These are just the ones I could think of. But generally speaking, I am sure there are many more ways and even some ways that haven't even been imagined yet.

Unmanaged dedicated servers are used by all sorts of different clients, the comments above listed a good portion of them but they left out all of the bad lemons such as spammers, hackers, scammers, seeders, booters or stresser attacks and the list goes on... Keep in mind that those are not long term clients, decent hosting providers suspend such clients for breaking their terms of service.
