It depends on the reason you're setting up your website. To be sincere, "com" domain is the oldest domain/extension ever known. Over 50% of all websites use ".com" extension due to its wide acceptability and popularity. Over the years, people have grown from what they know worked, to what they know works. I'm general, ".com" extension covers several areas which include countries domain, communities domain, organisations' and a few I can't mention. Although, people often search for ".com" when searching the web contents and this may affect the chance of your website been displayed if they use another domain from the ".com".
To this end, the reason, purpose and why your website is created needs to be considered before choosing an extension. To be candid, ".com" extension is more expensive to buy and maintain than its other counterparts. While ".com will search and will cover all areas of life such as communities, organisations and many other areas, the ".me" extension will only be suitable for your personal website which sheds more light about you. Though, when people are searching related contents with your website without using the ".com" or any other extension, your site may be displayed.
