What is mod_pagespeed and how to install it?

I have a small VPS and hosting several websites on it, I read that it can speed up web pages by optimizing CSS, JavaScript, images without requiring me modify your existing content, is that correct? and how to install it on my Centos with apache web server?

As I briefly read about It's can speed up web site.

To install the packages, on Debian/Ubuntu, please run the following command:

sudo dpkg -i mod-pagespeed-*.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

For CentOS/Fedora, please execute:

sudo yum install at # if you do not already have 'at' installed
sudo rpm -U mod-pagespeed-*.rpm

Maybe someone will join this discussion who know little more about it.

How You can check if mod_pagespeed works?

You can check Gtmetrix and check your caching and page speed.
First disable any other caching and check plain Website.
write or make picture of results or leave it open in one tab.
Then install and activate mod_pagespeed and check your website again (on other tab) then compare results.
See if there some suggestion what do you have to do and try to search answer for that.

After you done everything enable all other caching and check your website again and see final result.

If I recall, didn't Google drop pagespeed some time last year?

I think LiteSpeed had mod_pagespeed built in though I couldn't find it when I checked some months ago. cPnginx has it built in though I found it to be quite buggy when it was first released, and I haven't used it since.

It's better when you optimise the website files themselves going by tips and suggestions at Google PageSpeed Insights.

Any plugin that changes cPanel to a Nginx system has issues. I think there's only two or three plugins, and of those;

- One was the original, and I think people had issue with support
- The second one was a complete copy of the original
- The third one fell off

I tested two of them a few years ago, and beyond it being buggy, removing the plugin was another issue. One would then need to fix Apache to get it working again.

Agreed testing a few nginx cpanel plugins years ago and they weren't optimal, had to tweak their default nginx settings myself.

From when i tested mod_pagespeed for apache seems to use relatively more server resources i.e. cpu than ngx_pagespeed does with nginx. Both mod_pagespeed and ngx_pagespeed do use more resources to get that page load speed benefit though as there's no such thing as a free lunch. You need to pay for the performance i.e. memory caching for performance you pay with increased memory usage

mod_pagespeed is highly used with React.js websites, it makes the website super smooth and flexible however for normal JQuery and normal HTML, CSS you'll barely notice any difference
