Hi Harry,

Software raid used to be the poor mans raid controller but it has come a long away over the years and is now very decent.
Typically a hardware controller will give you better fault tolerance and performance. If you just have a couple of drives for a mirror setup I would go with software raid but hardware is recommended for Raid 5/10.

Hardware controllers wont necessarily give better performance, specially when it comes to low-end ones, nowadays with increasing CPU performance there is almost no difference when it comes to Raid 0/1, even capable controllers can give inconsistent results when used with SSD Drives. However, if used with HDDs, random write access pattern (databases, virtual machines) will greatly suffer compared to an hardware RAID controller.

I would say Software RAID is fine for Shared/Reseller Hosting and Hardware RAID is pretty much a must for VPS Hosting. That said, it depends on the usage/business model, e.g., quality .vs quantity of customers hosted on the server(s), what content can be hosted, the number of resources that can be used by the customers, and whether the server is oversold/overloaded or not.
