I am wanting to start playing around with server administration. I want to buy a new unmanaged VPS so I have played around with it a bit, but I have less experience on managing a VPS, web hosting control panels and web server configurations. My question is there much difference in initial setup? I wanted to get a VPS so I could learn from the beginning. Any helps?

Its good that you are trying to learn . You are on the right track , getting a linux unmanaged VPS is and then start learning. You have plenty of learning material available , go through the linux How tos , administration tutorials. Learning system administration needs patience , its not like that you will learn everything in a month or so .. it needs continuous practice , make sure you updated with latest updates and technologies.

Also there are no standard fixes for any issues , when an issue occurs it has to be resolved at its root .. so practice in that way.

You have a lot to learn.

I would recommend the following topics of study:

Linux System Administration
cPanel/WHM
DNS
Networking
Common TCP services
Server and network security
MySQL

That's a little reading list to get you started :D

This is a great way to learn web hosting after you have basic knowlege about it.

There is an online course on lynda teaching to manage a linux hosting but I have seen it so long in the past, I am not sure it can help you.
Besides, you can learn from reading web hosting tutorials or on web hosting forums, there are quick tips to search and learn.

I presume that you basic purpose to learn VPS is to host a website so don't need go in other domains for the time being as learning linux is not something which can be done in a short time. So I would suggest you to go through little tutorials of linux file structuring, using command line editors, installing and managing server, securing your vps, configuring firewall. Atleast after this you'll accomplish to launch your website and can continue learning other parts of vps managing.
