Hi Marc,

You need the following:

1. Reseller Account
2. Website to sell your plans
3. Customer Management and billing software (WHMCS)
4. Verified online payment account such as PayPal

A reseller account will cost you around $10 per month but space and features vary with different providers.
You will need to build a website to sell your plans from however you can get some good themes for the billing software (WHMCS) which will make a good looking front end site.

WHMCS is recommend and will integrate into your website allowing customers to place orders and have those orders automatically setup on the server upon successful payment. You can buy a license for around $15 per month.

A business PayPal (Free) or similar online merchant account to receive your customers payment.

That is all their is to it really, it has never been easier or cheaper to become a reseller.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

A reseller account wiht Inmotion starts at just $20 a month and includes WHMCS as well as Inmotions front end customer support for your customers as well. The support alone can save you at least $50 per month, so it's a very cost effective solution for a new host

You forgot the cost of legal documents to do business in America. It varies by state. But since I've lived and done business in both New York and Michigan, I can tell you that the average DBA is about $30 and the average LLC is about $50.

You can also sign up as an MLM marketer and I recommend you do this. It doesn't matter what for. But the purpose of this is for when you register your EIN # with the IRS you can choose the option "outside sales representative."

This now gives you the legal right to claim every mile, every coffee, and every meal as a tax deduction. Literally everything you buy it now tax deductible. You cannot do that by registering as another type of profession. For instance you cannot write off coffee as a "web service provider" because the IRS wont recognize that.

Where did you get these numbers that "the average LLC is about $50"? I think filing fees are often closer to $100+ and furthermore there are costs of registered agents, and/or foreign entity fees if you plan to register out of state. Running a legitimate business definitely requires a more substantial upfront investment than a large percentage of "hosts" are willing to give. It is one reason the industry gets a bad rep.

For me it depends on how much you want to do yourself or have the skills to do. InMotion Hosting, HostGator, and most other major hosting companies offer great reseller plans that are affordable. But you have to provide all the support for your customers. These types of plans are bare bones in the sense that they give you the hosting platform and a few tools, but you do everything else yourself.

On the other hand, there is resellerspanel, which offers a free reseller program. I have had 3 stores with them for about 5 years now, I love it. So do my customers by the way. The cool thing about these plans is that all you have to do is market and sell. All of the support, billing, etc is done by resellers panel.
Plus, they have a control panel called Hepsia that in my humble opinion is the most intuitive, user friendly control panel out there. It kind of sucks that they are the only way to get this awesome control panel.
So basically how it works is you sign up free, and then you can create as many stores as you want. You get 3 options for launching your site(s): pre-made template provided by RP, choice of several great WordPress themes, or remote forms you can embed on any website you create yourself. Then you create your hosting plans, or use their defaults, set your prices, and you are pretty much good to go. Ok, so there may be a few more steps, but this is the jist of it.
You get paod a comission from each sale your store(s) make.
The hosting platform is solid. The customer support is superb. You do not have to worry that your product is not solid, it really is.
You will eventually grow skilled enough to go with traditional reseller plans, but until then, this is an ideal way to get started. Once you are performing well, it will be passive income that allows you to pursue other goals.
