Can you tell me how to know a website is hosting on a VPS or a Shared or a Dedicated Server? I only use this way for analyzing purpose to know a website is using which hosting/server. It can be helpful to find a good web hosting that a website is using from there.

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

It can be difficult to know what is powering a website from looking at it externally.
You could do some digging in DNS to see what else is on the IP (if PTR records exist) other than that you can't be exactly sure.

Hi Matt,
like LJSHost said, you should be able to see if there are some other websites on the same IP, but a VPS can host several websites, and if the website use cloudflare it will not work.
There is no difference between someone which use a dedicated server to host all his websites and a shared hosting.

You could search on whois.domaintools.com and there you can see if the ip is shared with other sites or not.

Just curious why does it matter? Both vps/dedicated/shared will do the same job for a website, also any company which use to sell webhosting it must have their services optimised to serve and offer great performance for a website. You need to know that in most cases it does not all depend on a company server/webserver you need to optimise your site/plugins too to make it much better.

Hello,

Its should be difficult to know that if you have domain name only. You can find it your server is vps or dedicated server easily if you have ssh access to the server by running a command.

====================
dmidecode -i | grep product
====================

If the server is virtual server it will shows virtualization technology used to create this VPS. If it is a dedicated server, it will shows the correct product id like "Dell model name" etc.

Best Regards,

Did you even read OP question carefully? Because your comment it makes no sense btw... if he own any server like vps/dedicated etc its normally that he know what he have or what he ordered, vps or a dedicated server. He is asking how to know in other servers i.e hostgator, godaddy etc what do they use to server a customer/website, a dedicated server or a vps server.
