This might seem like an amateur question...but do "alt" tags on ahref links help?

....or am I wasting lots of time putting alt="xxxxxxxxxxxx' inside every hyperlink.....is it like adding meta keywords into pages, which Google ignores?

alt texts are good for images. But putting them in each and every hyperlink is not necessary.

Alt tags are for images only not for a href tags!

Alt tags were originally developed to improve accessibility for impaired visitors (blind people).

But alt attributes have somehow become solely an SEO element for many.

For anchor text, you should use the Title tag instead. Alt is not valid atribute of a.

Hello,

Yes, you need to fill the alt tag of your images, it will help them to get indexed into Google Images and bring you traffic additionnal. And it's also an accessibility element for users which cannot see images.
