Submitting to worthwhile directories is a good idea. Mostly paid ones.

The other two are a waste of time.

About 15 years of experience. That's how I can say it.

If you are leaving comments on blogs for the purpose of getting links, you are not doing SEO. You are a spammer. It is one of the lowest forms of link building around. Not to mention that if the site allows people to drop links, you are probably going to be surrounded by porn links and links to sites about how to take a magic pill that will make your dick bigger. If you want to play in those neighborhoods, be my guest.

Social bookmarking sites are a total waste. They are inundated with content. 5 minutes after posting something, your post is back on page 25 making the link virtually worthless.

SEOPub, do you happen to know for sure 2 or 3 directories you might list of PM me that are excellent in quality? I used to rely on directories a long time ago, but for as much effort as you seem to put in to find and post, it seems like the links have always been very short-lived.

Social bookmarking is great for traffic, but the backlinks you get from these hold almost no power (juice).

I submit my articles along with other interesting things I find to 10 social bookmark sites a day (I have a list of 100 I use) and it drives an extra 50-100 visitors which isn't. If someone likes or upvotes my post it tends to hit an extra 400-500 views on Stumbleupon and Digg.

It's good for that, but not for backlinking.

Overdoing of every thing is risky so if you are submitting your website to high PR directories and bookmarking in quality bookmarking sites there is no risk involved but using tools to submit your website to too many low quality directories can harm the site and same is for the blog comment if your comment is worth enough and add value then there is no issue.

Social bookmarking does nothing but dilute your profile. To use social bookmarks correctly (or how I do it with GSA) would be to use them as a secondary tier. Meaning

1st Tier <<<<<<secondary tier points to 1st tier
^
^
^
2nd Tier <<<<<<secondary tier points to 2ns tier
^
^
^
3rd Tier <<<<<<secondary tier points to 3rd tier

1st, 2nd, and 3rd tiers are articles, guest posts, PBNs, and mostly contextual links with some social networking and micro blogs. All contextual.

Then secondary tiers point at tiers individually. These I use social bookmarks for indexing purposes. The list I get from Auto Approve Marketplace are pretty solid on the social bookmarking end and alot of my bookmarks get indexed. Great for indexing my primary tiers and saving money on indexing services.

Bookmarking Submission - If you have check your link after posting, then you will find that link is a nofollow links. It means link junice will not pass through this link. You will not get a backlink.

Directory Submission - These websites take long time to approve your link and most of the website spam score is high. You can try only paid and high authority website.

Blog Commenting - Its not a good way to create a backlinks and drive traffic to your website. Try to write blog yourself and make backlink from there.

In these days some people use above things and some not but as per my knowledge be careful if you are doing above things.

Personally, I just use some of the bigger social bookmarking sites like Stumbleupon and social media sites. I also do some blog commenting. I don't really submit stuff to article directories (once they got hit by the search engines) like I did back-in-the-day. While I get fewer links, I keep on top of the stuff that's going on in the various niches I'm in, so I can be one of the first ones to blog about it or whatever.

Social Bookmarking- It is not an important techniques in today's seo. If you will do, you can generate only low quality backlinks.

Directory submission- I agree with web2bizz22 Directory submission sites takes so much time to submit your website. Only paid directories submit your site on the same time.

Blog commenting- It is important to get website promotion, but only if you will not put any signature link in your comment.

Use Blog posting and article submission techniques for the promotion of your website content. It helps to get high rank for your website keywords.

Blog commenting can be very useful of course if you put interesting comment and if blog allow do-follow or any kind of links. Many blogs have no-follow links and use custom comment scripts like (Facebook or disqus) and don't allow any link in comment.

Social bookmarking don't have do-follow links but can bring visitors and in that way can have impact on SEO, monthly / daily visits have part in ranking page, blog , post. When SE see that you have traffic on that page will indexed faster and rank higher assuming that there is useful conent.

Directory submission can help you to get back links, but don't expect pick traffic from them. Why? In past people use directories to find websites in niche category that interesting them, but now they use SE.
Nowadays directories use for submitting sites and/or articles for back links. There is many bad directories 'cause admins just accept links and don't care about SEO and get bad reputation for all other websites.
It is true that free directories have huge demand and waiting time is couple months, but all have option for 24h review but can have spammy links submitted. Thing is that you need to find good directories with huge number of indexed pages, or look for paid ones. Paid directories have less demand and better quality submissions then free.

So it is on you what and how you will work for your SEO.

Yes, it is still worthy, but make sure all these belong to some good ranked and authentic ones.
Bad affect, for this I would say that Excess of everything is bad.

But the thing is that getting quality social bookmarking, directory submission and blog commenting is not as easy as it was before. So, you may spend more time on producing quality content or services and helping others on related forums as compared to doing these now less worthy things.

With Penguine 4.0 released building backlink from these sources will attract penalty within few days instead of short term boost they provided before release of this algo update. Few people started seeing improvement in SERP ranking even though they were hit by some kind of algo penalty.

Mind sharing that list?

Here we go again. There is no penalty. There is ignoring nontopic oriented backlinks. On topic backinks continue to be a good source of traffic and SEO.

Be very careful with using too much of anything related to SEO. Google has been on a bit of a rampage with penalties and it will be only a matter of time if. Directories are good if they are specific to your niche, you may be suprised how much genuine traffic you get from them.

Social bookmarking still works as of today. I have seen people receive insane amounts of traffic through Reddit alone. If you are thinking of just posting links then it won't work! You will need to interact and participate within the community.

What should be the criteria to filter good social bookmarking resources from the low quality ones when we receive an offer from a provider? I am fairly new to SEO and I have been asked to research quality backlink resources and prepare a report to my managers. Most of the blogs do not take comments without moderation in our country anyway and I have read that using directories would not really work for every page category. I posted an advertisement on the most popular freelancer platform in our country and so far the replies that I received includes what they call social bookmarking and promotional articles and I have no concept of social bookmarking. This is why I wanted to consult you to be able to make educated choices until Monday...

Yes, these things are still working but you should be concentration more on quality rather than the quantity when performing these tasks.

Yeah, all of the tactics are most important to rank a keywords on google or other search engine. But the sites you are going to leave your website link must have decent high PA/DA with good neighborhood. This is most important.
