What makes you say you really need them? How can you know that if you've never had them before?

They can be good for SEO though.

For finding them you can use some dorks or "footprints" as the kids like to call em.

Find edu forums sites, gov forums sites

site:edu inurl:login (Create an account)
site:edu (powered by vbulletin)
inurl:.edu/phpbb2
inurl:.edu/ (Powered by Invision Power Board)
site:edu (powered by SMF)
site:edu "powered by SMF"
inurl:.gov +inurl:forum + inurl:register
inurl:.gov +inurl:forum
inurl:.edu/phpbb inurl:register
inurl:edu forum
inurl:gov forum
inurl:.edu+inurl:forum

You can search manually or use ScrapeBox.

Manual searches with manual placement usually works best for your money site.

ScrapeBox for your tier3's etc

There is nothing special about them. It is just a big myth that continues to be dragged on by crappy link sellers who are just looking to scam people. If you see anyone selling .edu (or .gov) links they are either clueless or deliberately trying to rip people off.

I disagree. I've done experiments using .gov/edu links in the past and those sites go on to be authority sites. Was it purely down to the gov/edu backlinks we built only? It's hard to say now because it was used in conjunction with other SEO which 9/10 has turned out to be successful but we only built them manually by hand which takes longer and is harder but much more valuable for the juice they passed.

For years anecdotal evidence has suggested that Google loves government and education sites. They offer valuable, high-quality content, are highly ranked in search results and often have very high PR/DA/PA stats and provided its not a nofollow link can provide lots of PR. Although PR has now been disabled other link juice/spiders can still flow through them which increases the rank/indexing of your site.

I agree with what you're saying completely in that .gov and .edu links are not treated any differently in the eyes of Google because Google looks at the stats of that site regardless of its TLD. But getting links from .edu/.gov sites is not just for improving SEO alike but rather also for improving your credibility and authority in the eyes of people. Getting a link or guest post / article from a governmental site can install trust in people who are using those .gov/.edu sites. And to improve metrics in other areas too.

Plus its not easy to get a .gov/.edu domain (you actually have to be a government member or school board) so they also have that trust factor with Google and people alike. This is why getting links from them are well sought after. Not just for sellers to trick people. But yes there are sellers that will take advantage of people and sell them a bunch of spam blog post .gov/.edu comment links or forum profiles etc. It's not about that its about doing it properly and building the right type of links in the right way. facepalm.gif

However all of that has now changed completely because the best links to get now are related links from sites in the same niche as yours.

Now if you can get high authority government educational links in the same niche as yours those are definitely very valuable links to have.

That's a no brainer! :smart:

Look there is nothing special about a link just because it is on a .edu or .gov site. All things being equal, a link from a .com, .net, .org, or .xyz site would be just as valuable. Google does not put any added emphasis on links because they come from a .edu site. Anyone can get links from .edu sites. They are sold all over the place and all they consist of is crappy profile or blog links.

Now if you got the homepage of harvard.edu to link to you, sure that would be immensely valuable, but not because it is a .edu site. It would be valuable because it is a high authority webpage.

And this is what gets people in trouble...

For years anecdotal evidence has suggested that Google loves government and education sites. Many educational and government sites are high quality authoritative sites. So yes, a link from a RELEVANT quality page on one of them is great. (I'm not talking about profile links or crappy blog links.) These are the kind of links you have to literally ask for from someone at the institution itself.

People saw how a lot of the sites that were being linked to from .gov and .edu sites were ranking well. Then they drew the completely wrong conclusion. Instead of looking at the fact that it was a link from a high authority, relevant webpage, they decided that Google must love all edu and .gov links.

That is how this stupid myth was born.

On a side note, DA and PA do not matter.
