I would say there are a few big mistakes:

1) Paying for fake followers, likes etc... It may look good on first glance but the fact of the matter is that its easy to spot such accounts given the lack of interaction from genuine people... On networks such as FB - your organic reach is severely limited to approx 10-15%.. If you have too many fake followers then the result will be that real people will not see your updates, they will not interact and consequently it will impact your entire social networking strategy...

2) Another big mistake in my opinion is direct sales... People want to see value, chances are they are looking for help with specific pain points relating to your niche... Focus on building trust with offering useful, helpful, interesting info before attempting promo's and sales...

3) In addition try get your social network to visit your website.... To signup to your newsletter and to read your content... The primary purpose for most is to use social networks as a means to funnel traffic... Hence only provide an enticing summary with a link to your post/page so that you can get the traffic...

4) Interact with your audience... Answer questions or reply to comments... After all you are there to socialize ;-)

Hope that helps!

Couldn't agree more with what Elci suggested. When I first got into IM I would just look for things I could make money off of and try to develop an interest around that niche. This works for churn and burns that have low comp. I stick with niches under a million results in the SERPs and these are fairly easy to rank. Your audiences on social networks are also more engaged.

THe key is to engage and provide your audience with great material. One of my audiences for instances is SEO. I use a bunch of SEO tools. I can tell people about the perks and how to do tricks with the tools I use and most of the time they will gladly use my aff link for the tool. But I actually use the product I am collecting a commission for.

So what to avoid when social networking? Getting into a niche that you know minimal about. Unless you plan to churn and burn it. I do this with Amazon affiliate sites.

This is my advise.
Go to Fiverr -> Social Network Marketing. Order a service you like for 5$.
You will get results.
I order a service on it and now, my website have over > 1600 visitor per days from fb.
It is really good.
