Can I run an Indian website on an Australian server?

Greeting. I am Jeremy. I am a freelancer and still new to web development, so I am confirming a doubt. My new Indian client wants me to develop a website for his eye hospital. However, as an Australian citizen, can I host this website on my server, or must I get an Indian server? I would appreciate any response.

Yes, of course, why wouldn't you?... Look, there's no regulation that forces you to use hosting in India, unless, of course, the project handles sensitive or regulated data (which I doubt)...

Look, the only thing you need to keep in mind is the following:

If the client needs faster loading times for local visitors, a server in India or a nearby region will offer lower latency.

If the site will handle patient records or medical or critical information, you'll need to comply with the client's data storage regulations.

But for a business website, or a hospital website with public information, hosting it in Australia is perfectly acceptable. Just make sure the client understands the latency difference.

Technically nothing stops you. The site runs the same on an Australian box, and the mechanical difference is latency, which for visitors in India means noticeably more time on every round trip. A CDN in front handles most of that for images and static files, though not for anything that has to hit the database.

The part worth slowing down on is what the site collects. An eye hospital site is rarely brochure pages only, there is usually an appointment form, and once names, phone numbers and a description of the problem are sitting in a database, that is health related personal data rather than public content. India has the DPDP Act 2023 covering personal data, and I am not the right person to tell you how it lands on one specific hospital. Put that question to the client, get their answer in writing, and make sure the contract says who carries the responsibility. Is this brochure pages only, or is there booking and document upload in the plan?
