I prefer using automated cloud backups with versioning. Services like Backblaze or AWS S3 offer reliable, offsite storage, and you can easily set up incremental backups to keep things efficient. It’s secure, scalable, and ensures you always have access to the latest versions of your files.

Can't understand why everyone is only discussing cPanel... How you take backups depends on what you need to backup, really.

For me, a combination of cloud backups and local storage works best, it's like having a safety net. I love using services like Backblaze for automatic cloud backups, but I also keep a physical external hard drive just in case.

I recommended using AWS S3 backup method, which is both reliable and affordable. It provides secure storage with flexible pricing options, making it a great choice for backups.

Honestly, if I had to pick one backup tip, it’d be automating a nightly database dump. Just set up a cron job that runs mysqldump (or wp db export via WP‑CLI) and writes the SQL to a timestamped file. That way you always have a fresh snapshot of your site’s data ready to restore in minutes. :)

I used to love R1Soft backups, but their prices are pretty high, so JetBackups is reliable. Normal backups are just as good.

Use a free WordPress backup plugin like UpdraftPlus (free version does daily backups to Google Drive or Dropbox). Your hosting control panel (cPanel/DirectAdmin) usually has built-in backups, enable those. Set up a simple MySQL dump script via cron job to backup your database weekly to a free cloud service like Google Drive. If you're tech-savvy, use rsync or FTP to sync files to a free Backblaze B2 account (they give free tier for small backups).

The free approach: daily plugin backups to Google Drive + weekly manual MySQL dumps + your hosting provider's built-in backups. It's not perfect, but it covers you for most disasters without costing anything.

Hope it helps!

I'm working on a project to make my own NAS with ZimaOS; there are several tutorials, and it's open source and easy to use.

I would advise you that the most important thing isn't just making backups, but being able to restore everything easily and efficiently when you need to; focus on that.

You could combine several methods: daily automatic backups on the server and also an external copy on another VPS or in the cloud. That way, if the server fails or something is accidentally deleted, you always have an off-site copy.
