For beginners with few customers, it would be fine to go with an opensource products for billing to save the budget.

For companies with larger customer base, prefer to use only trusted billing softwares which ensures a bug free services in all aspects. A buggy billing software may ruin the reputation and trust.

@GixHosting, I wouldn't recommend a cracked version of any software especially if you are looking to be a legitimate business, not to mention you risk the chance of facing any type of legal action if they find out. Remember, the web is an open source platform. Any real customer that may be interested in your service is going to do a quick search on google and find posts from you about cracked software. Probably not a good start.

You can find many web hosting providers who offer free WHMCS licenses or would be willing to include one for a product if not offered. Just talk to their Sales Department and see what they are willing to do to win your business. This will also save you the hassle in the future trying to convert data from an open source product into something like WHMCS or another similar billing software.

It is not recommended to use a billing softwares with infrequent updates.
Future upgrade to any well developed licensed billing platforms would be a bit tedious.
The incompabiltes between systems would be very large.
