Some websites are HTTP and some are HTTP with an S. Can anyone help me understand this?

I highly appreciate your help with this!

This is my first time I've really ever looked into HTTPS and HTTP, so I'm learning something new here too. But, I'll try to explain it as best as I can from what I learned.
Most popular sites and ForumWeb use HTTPS, therefore, means that your information is being secured. HTTPS makes it difficult for hackers in gathering your information. If we were using HTTP, then hackers would have an easier time grabbing your information. The process works like this; the web server and your computer create a code that both sides understand. The code is then used to scramble the message; this means if you are not the recipient you are unable to read it.
It's like Morris code, you and your ally developed a secret language that both of you know. And when someone is trying to listen in, they have no idea what it means.

HTTP stands for Hypertext transfer protocol.
HTTPS stands for Hypertext transfer protocol secure.

There is nothing fancy here...HTTPS is for secure HTTP where it is secured using SSL certificate. SSL is securing the traffic by encrypting the traffic and help to authorize the identity of the website. If you would like to know in detail, try googling the topic.

While reading or sending e-mails and uploading data on your website, in most cases data is sent without any encryption. If someone wanted to take over the flow, all data could fall into the hands of that someone. Due to this security concern, it is always recommended to use a SSL certificate for a website. SSL certificate allows you to connect to your website with HTTPS instead of HTTP. It is especially important when hosting an e-commerce or basically any other website which has a signing in or payment option. There are free (Let's Encrypt) or paid (Comodo) SSL certificates. The main reasons for ordering SSL certificate are:
  • keeping data secure when transferring between servers;
  • higher customer trust;
  • better ranking in search engines.
After ordering and installing SSL certificate, the data transferred from the website becomes encrypted. Then, if someone stole such data, it could not be used anywhere because of encryption.

Is there a difference between free SSL and paid SSL?

There is no difference between free and paid certificates in terms of security, but paid certificate requires more checking about the owner of the website before issuing it. Because of this most banks and other financial/government institutions have paid certificates that provide a certificate where the name of the company is provided near the website name.
If you have a simple website, the free SSL certificate should be enough.

This is a very helpful information especially if someone is into putting up an online business. Many are being a target of hacking and scams nowadays. I'll share this information to some of my friends who are planning to have an online business soon.

Thank you for the information! :)

HTTPS is becoming the new norm. More than half of the internet traffic is already served via HTTPS. Many small websites and blogs that don't process payments are switching to HTTPS because of the slight SEO boost it offers. But more importantly, because of Chrome's HTTP warning.

Starting this very July, Chrome displays a security warning when visitors access an HTTP site. This may cause a massive drop in traffic and damage reputation beyond repair.

If you're interested in learning more about the SSL Certificates and how to make the most out of an HTTPS transition, this e-book is an excellent resource.

I was told by some legit sites before that when the websites have an S on the http, it means that the site is secured and that you can enter your personal information without any worry that it will spam you. However, not all sites without the “s” are spam sites. Same thing with sites that have “s” on it. You will really have to use your best judgment when browsing on sites.

Thank you for the input! Yes, you're right! I made some research on this and basically I found that having an S is a more reliable and secured site than having no S.
