Greetings,

We just recently completed our migration into a brand new Datacenter and we are looking to shift focus into expanding our services.

I am curious what are the top three make-or-break features your provider must offer. I'm not really looking for 'stable network' or 'good hardware' but add-on services that you look for that will make you look elsewhere if X or Y provider doesn't offer.

Can you list your top three things you look for in a provider?

Thanks!

It is quite different if you are asking for providers that offering shared, reseller, VPS, cloud or dedicated server only.

If your question is for VPS providers, I would consider top 3 things when looking for a VPS plan

RAM
CPU
Support

One extremely important thing that I find everyone asks about is DDoS protection. In today's world, it seems you can't survive without it.

Apart from hardware, I'd say support and network. If you can't have a solid network, there is nothing good hardware is going to do to help. DDOS protection is a good thing to have, but we have found that 95% of our customers don't need it. And if they do, we offer it as an addon service. People who feel they do, we have them use CloudFlare that protects them from such attacks.

Customizable Hardware and Software. Many providers offer prepared configurations, which, quite frankly, don't work for many applications. They may serve well for a specific use case, but the scope is limited.

Dedicated providers with available hardware and willingness to build custom solutions are ideal for companies handling a variety of hosting requirements.

This is interesting. What kind of customizations are you thinking about?

As you can guess by our name, that was the premise of our company when we started back in the day. Over the years however, I've felt that just about everyone now is willing to customize their offerings.

Are there aspects that are still hard to find in your opinion? If so, which?

Overall, the ability to configure processor(s), memory, and hard drives are the most critical in terms of hardware. We use the Limestone Networks data center in Dallas for colocation of our owned hardware, but also for purchasing leased servers when there is unexpected requirements, such as to fulfill unique client requirements or to scale out our virtualization clusters on the fly.

This has played a huge factor in our decision to do business with this company and their platform is perfect for our requirements.
